Visiting scholar Adam Morton presents his research:

Under capitalism, how is space organized in our everyday lives through the streets we walk, the monuments we visit, and the places where we meet?

This talk presents the making of modern state space in Mexico through the perspective of a spatial political economy. It will draw on my ongoing research on the production of space in Mexico, influenced by Henri Lefebvre, by focusing on the work of Esther Born in documenting the country’s modernist urban development and architecture in the 1930s.

Adam David Morton is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Sydney. His research interest in spatial political economy is shaped through interdisciplinary concerns across political economy, development, geographical studies, and historical sociology in their relevance to Mexico. He is the author of Revolution and State in Modern Mexico: The Political Economy of Uneven Development (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013) and of a forthcoming article on state, space, and architecture in modern Mexico, in the Journal of Latin American Studies.

Adam Morton was a Visiting Scholar at the CCA in 2017.
