CCA Research Fellowship Program
As an international research institution, the CCA operates in the spaces between architectural culture at large and academic discourse through exhibitions, publications, public events, and research programs. The CCA’s Research Fellowship Program supports innovative, advanced research to foster new kinds of intellectual exchange that spark long-term dialogue and debate. Fellowships are open to scholars, practitioners, thinkers, researchers, writers, and curators who intend to pursue interdisciplinary research on architecture, urbanism, landscape, and design at the CCA.
We welcome applications from individuals at various stages of their career and from various fields of study, including the history, theory, and criticism of architecture, urbanism, and landscape, as well as art history, design theory, anthropology, geography, sociology, literature, philosophy, cultural studies, media studies, and science and technology studies. Although proposed research projects may rely extensively on the CCA Collection as a primary source, we are interested above all in original and significant projects that develop both critical readings and creative works, writings, or designs.
What topics interest us?
At the CCA we are working on a broad range of topics relevant to architectural discourse today. Current topics of particular interest include: the digital turn in processes of design and communication in architecture; the transformation of the profession or discipline and its relationship to society past and present; the role of photography role within architectural visual culture, especially in the digital era; the relationship of architecture to the environment, in terms of the ways architects use, impact, and understand nature; and the historical role of architecture in decolonization and in the contemporary figuration of the so-called Global South. But we are eager to add other topics to this list, which tackle cultural, social, economic, technological, environmental and/or political issues.
What does the CCA offer?
Research Fellows will be offered a residency at the CCA between June and August 2019, for a period of one to three months. Each Fellow will have access to a private office and receive a monthly stipend of $ 5 000 CAD, as well as additional financial support for travel expenses. Based on the scope of the proposed research project, the CCA’s curatorial committee will determine the duration of the residency in discussion with each candidate in order to best support their project. In addition to a public presentation of their work-in-progress, Research Fellows are expected to participate in discussions, seminars, and workshops organized at the CCA, exchange with CCA staff, and engage the local academic and architectural community.
What is the application process?
Applications must be submitted through our online application portal by 16 September 2018.
All applicants must propose a clearly formulated research project with a concrete expected output that can significantly enrich how we think and speak about architecture. Applications must include a research proposal (1000 words) addressing how the research project relates to the CCA (which collection holdings will be consulted, if applicable, or which of our lines of investigation will be addressed) and specifying a production strategy; a detailed project schedule (500 words) for a one- to three-month period of research; a CV (3 pages maximum) and short biography; one representative publication (article or book chapter) or equivalent (PDF format); and the names of three potential referees. Letters of recommendation are not required at the time of application and may only be requested in the case of a successful application.
We strongly encourage applicants with research projects based on recent acquisitions to check and confirm availability with email@example.com before submitting their project proposals. For questions regarding the program, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
What is the selection process?
Research Fellows are selected through a two-step process by an international consultative committee and the CCA curatorial committee, which includes:
• Monica Ponce de Leon, Princeton University, USA
• Jeffrey Schnapp, Harvard University, USA
• Bill Sherman, The Warburg Institute, University of London, UK
• Philip Ursprung, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
• Phyllis Lambert, CCA Founding Director
• Mirko Zardini, CCA Director
• Giovanna Borasi, CCA Chief Curator
• Kim Förster, CCA Associate Director, Research
The consultative committee will meet at the CCA in fall 2018 to select a short list of candidates. In a second step the CCA curatorial committee will conduct interviews with the shortlisted candidates to discuss each project and determine the length of the fellowship. The results will be communicated in early November 2018. Once granted for a specific year, the Research Fellowship is non-renewable.
Who should apply?
Scholars applying to the Program should hold at least a doctoral degree. All other applicants, practitioners, and cultural producers must demonstrate substantial work experience and a commitment to publishing, exhibiting, and/or professional practice.
As of 2019 the Research Fellowship Program will replace the Visiting Scholars Program, which the CCA has offered since 1997. For more information on past Visiting Scholars, please click here.
