Scope and Content

File documents Cedric Price's student work at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, England. Five projects are represented: an ice rink (Richmond, Richmond upon Thames, London); the British Transport Commission offices, exhibition halls and restaurants (London); a wholesale gown showroom and offices (London); the Eel and Elephant, a pub and restaurant with boarding facilities (location unknown); and a design for the Auschwitz Memorial competition, entered jointly with Richard Padovan. The design development process for the large scale public ice rink at Richmond is apparent in numerous sections through seating, and enlarged construction details for the roof. Presentation drawings mounted on yellow paper show the final project. Drawings for the British Transport Commission offices, exhibition halls, and restaurants include primarily programmatic development plans and exterior elevations. Drawings for a wholesale gown showroom and offices include floor plans, exterior elevations, building sections, and full-scale window details. One of the drawings includes a financial statement itemizing building costs and income possibilities from rental property. A coloured sketch interior perspective of the proposed showroom is included in a set of six drawings. Drawings for the Eel and Elephant, a pub and restaurant with boarding facilities include numerous storefront designs, many of which are rendered in coloured pencil and marker. A set of eighteen drawings illustrates the development of this project from preliminary sketches to presentation drawings. This project is similar in size, form, and function to Oldham Pub (part of AP144.S2.D1) and may be related in some way. Drawings for the Auschwitz Memorial show a freestanding memorial and pool on the grounds of the concentration camp. Material in this file was produced between 1955 and 1957.
