London Olympics 2012 and Lower Lea Valley Regeneration Masterplan
2006
Project
File documents the Foreign Office Architects involvement in the London Olympics 2012 and Lower Lea Valley Regeneration Masterplan, London, England. The Foreign Office Architects were invited to bid on the initial project in 2003, and won the opportunity to be part of the master-planning team for the regeneration of London’s Lower Lea Valley and the park design for the London Olympics 2012, along with EDAW, Allies & Morrison, HOK Sport and Fluid, and Buro Happold.
The master plan brief, issued by the London Development Agency, called for planning outlines for infrastructure, transport improvements and 11,000 homes, plus waterway and open space strategies, all within 215 hectares, and for an overall investment value of 4 billion GBP. The plan was designed to place sports venues within a green landscape that would become a continuation of the Lea Valley Park across the Thames and towards Greenwich. The landscape of the Olympic Park and the Concourse was designed with the aim of enforcing the qualities that are already present in the Lea Valley: the water canals, marshes, and winding roads.
The Foreign Office Architects remained involved in the project and the development of the park and infrastructure up until the planning approval stage, circa 2007. During this time they developed designs for venue locations, parks and the Olympic Bridges. In 2007 the organizing authority opened the project up to outside bids for the Velodrome venue, also known as the Olympic Velopark. The Foreign Office Architects prepared an RFQ and bid for the Velopark, separately from their previous role as part of the master-planning team, but did not win the bid.
File contains official project-planning specifications and documentation by the London Development Agency, computer-generated drawings, plans, presentation material and architectural models, including models for the Olympic Bridges and for the 2007 Velopark. Material in this file was produced between 2004 and 2007.
