1953-1960, predominant 1953-1955

Level of archival description:
File 1
Extent and medium:
  • 130 drawings
    0.14 l.m. of textual records
Scope and content:
File documents Cedric Price's studies with the University of Cambridge School of Architecture (now known as the Department of Architecture), at St. John's College in Cambridge, England. Material in the file includes student notes, drawing exercises which illustrate competency in standard architectural representation, technical drawing and construction detailing, as well as numerous design projects which are mostly small and focused in scope. Included are designs for a garage with a flat above; a retirement home; a nurseryman's offices and showroom; a sports pavilion for a boys' school; a vicarage; a library; a riverside restaurant; furniture; and others. A slightly larger-scale project is a development plan for Barnsbury, possibly in Islington, London, England. One project, "Unit House", which was to be completed within two days, was later illustrated in 'Space Design' (February 1992). Price's design is a small (8'-0" x 19'-0") transportable house which could be enlarged through the unfolding of three walls hung on the exterior. Also included is a drawing by Price of Le Corbusier's Palace of Soviets. Drawings in this file are almost all original work, mostly graphite, colored pencil, ink, ink washes, and watercolor washes on wove paper. This file also includes a reprographic copy of a drawing made by Price for C.B. Pearson & Son. Material in this file was produced between 1953 and 1960, but predominantly between 1953 and 1955.

File contains drawings and textual records.
