Scope and content:
File documents a competition organized by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation that called for the design a memorial and towers at Ground Zero, the former site of the World Trade Centre, New York City. The file documents the competition in two parts, as WTC1: The Bundled Towers, and as WTC2: Ground Zero Memorial and Towers. Material in this file was produced in 2002.
WTC1 called for the design of high-rise towers and a memorial for the Ground Zero site. The Foreign Office Architects' proposal was for a group of interconnected towers with a total area of 884,00,m2, known as The Bundled Tower. WTC2 was a competition by invitation, and the Foreign Office Architects were invited as part of the multinational United Architects team, along with GLF, KKA, IF and UN Studio. The competition brief called for 29,000m2 for the memorial, 69,000m2 of open space, a 6,000m2 conference centre, 927,000m2 of office space, 16,000m2 of retail space, and a 162,000m2 hotel. Their submission was shortlisted.
