Résumé:
Stories about witches are by their nature stories about the most basic and profound of human experiences—healing, sex, violence, tragedies, aging, death, and encountering the mystery and magic of the unknown. It is no surprise, then, that witches loom large in our cultural imaginations. In academia, studies of witches rarely emerge from scholars who are themselves witches and/or embedded in communities of witchcraft practitioners. ''The Witch Studies Reader'' brings together a diverse group of scholars, practitioners, and scholar-practitioners who examine witchcraft from a critical decolonial feminist perspective that decenters Europe and departs from exoticizing and pathologizing writing on witchcraft in the global South. The authors show how witches are keepers of suppressed knowledges, builders of new futures, exemplars of praxis, and theorists in their own right. Throughout, they account for the vastly different national, political-economic, and cultural contexts in which “the witch” is currently being claimed and repudiated. Offering a pathbreaking transnational feminist examination of witches and witchcraft that upends white supremacist, colonial, patriarchal knowledge regimes, this volume brings into being the interdisciplinary field of feminist witch studies.

Résumé:
The relationship between mankind and stone is elemental and deeply ingrained into all of us. Stone, after all, has been the primary building material for more than five thousand years of human history, and it continues to record our triumphs and failures. In this searching history of the expressive and practical use of stone, Richard Rhodes unlocks the underlying principles of stone;s highest and best use, and he illuminates rules codified by the medieval Freemason's guild. Century after century of stone use gradually produced the closely-guarded ''Sacred Rules'' as they are collectively known, considered to be the most important and closely-kept property of the ancient stone guildsmen. Previously available only to the initiated, the rules are explained here through historical examples and photographs for the first time ever. In these times of rapid development and expansive urbanization, Rhodes implores us to explore the essential qualities of stone that emerge from the Sacred Rules, not only to rediscover the ancient and traditional knowledge that governed its use for so long, but also to find a roadmap for how future generations might thoughtfully recapture the power this material offers.

Résumé:
Motherhood is a theme that stands at the core of life, but has nevertheless been kept in the private sphere for a long time, haunted by clichés, stigmas and myths. Motherhood has always been seen as trivial, not as a subject for real art. At the same time, artists with a womb have faced the cliché that they had to decide between making art or having a child, as both would take up all the mother’s time and energy. ''Mothering Myths'' unravels these clichés, stigmas and myths, through the lens of art, and a transhistorical and intersectional perspective, while being very playful and open to many interpretations. It breaks through the perspective of the individual mother figure and makes space for collectivity, different forms of ‘mothering’ and political questions surrounding self-determination. ''Mothering Myths'' presents the emancipatory nature of the artist-mother, the voluntarily childless woman, the non-female mother and the '‘raven mother'’, through concepts such as kinship, revolutionary parenting, womb consciousness and reproductive justice.

Résumé:
Robert Earl Paige is one of the most iconic artists and designers from Chicago’s South Side. A multidisciplinary artist and arts educator, he works across textile design, painting, collage, and sculpture. During the 1970s, he brought West African–inspired patterns to U.S. shoppers through the Dakkabar fabrics collection available at Sears, Roebuck, leading to the inclusion of Black culture in home design. In addition to exploring Paige’s personal and artistic practice, through essays by Dr. Romi Crawford and Dr. Gervais Marsh, ''The United Colors of Robert Earl Paige'' contextualizes his work in relation to social and artistic movements, from the minimalism and abstraction of the 1960s and 1970s to AfriCOBRA and the Black Arts Movement in Chicago and across the United States. Published in conjunction with Paige’s exhibition at Hyde Park Art Center in 2024, this fully illustrated book includes reproductions of the artist’s handpainted scarves, collages, and rugs made during the past sixty years, along with new ceramic tiles, collages, and textiles.

Résumé:
In Nairobi’s underserved neighborhoods, “hustle” has emerged as both a vital survival strategy and a way of life for youth. Exploring the multiple meanings and manifestations of the hustle economy across different scenarios of provisioning, distribution, exchange, learning, and mobilizing, ''Hustle Urbanism'' draws on more than a decade of ethnographic engagement to center the logics, perspectives, and inventive strategies of a group of youth who constantly navigate job scarcity, inadequate basic services, and climate-induced harms. Tatiana Thieme shows how young people develop tools of resistance against the legacies of colonial violence and uneven urban development while carving out spaces of opportunity for themselves and their peers. The stories she includes bring thick ethnographic detail and longitudinal perspective to the lives and livelihoods of youth whose diverse skill sets and knowledges span from circular economies and eco-activism to hip hop and local leadership. Filling a significant gap in both existing scholarship and popular discussion, ''Hustle Urbanism'' offers critical theorization of precarious urban environments and the affirmative modes of making life work in the city against the odds.

Résumé:
For too long, questions of care provision and inclusion have been shaped by economic justifications. This has led to the deprivation of care to individuals and communities based on capitalist assumptions about what and who can be cared for. ''Proposals for a Caring Economy'' takes these assumptions to task. Moving between examples focused on immigration and agriculture, patients and art audiences, green energy transitions and unhoused people, prison abolitionists and clients of domestic violence services, the contributors here argue that we need new ways to conceptualize care and its applications. ''Proposals for a Caring Economy'' articulates an economy that situates care at the forefront; sees the preservation of individual, community, and environmental wellbeing as the primary good; and focuses attention on building a sustainable economy of caring that will radically transform social connections and possibilities.

Résumé:
This volume presents the ''Circle of Doing Research'' : a model to get you started in art and design research. Conceived within the contextual setting of the art school, it is holistic, multidisciplinary and prioritizes practice. It consists of six actions. The basis of the circle is formed by the following: research by making, research of context and participatory research, where information, prototypes, encounters and experiences are gathered and produced. The remaining three actions are concerned with documenting research, publicizing research and reflecting on research. The ''Circle of Doing Research'' is an open, accessible and non-linear model. Each action can be an entry point, whether you want to start with material experiments, conversations with others, or in the library. All actions are connected and inform each other which encourages a process of iteration and constant reflection. The ''Circle'' can be enriched with methods, sources and focal points according to specific disciplines and needs. The book contains research trajectories of art and design students throughout, illustrating the rich possibilities to be uncovered in the unfolding of a research project. This illuminating model can be useful to all, from those beginning to learn about research in art and design to more advanced practitioners.

Résumé:
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of his medium, Robert Frank broke new ground with his candid, poignant images of American life in the mid-20th century. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Pace in New York, and in celebration of the centennial of Frank’s birth, "Robert Frank: Hope makes visions" presents an in-depth look at the photographer and filmmaker’s process across various media. Through a selection of his lesser-known photographs, collages, sketches and maquettes from 1955 to 2016, a new portrait of the artist emerges, one that shows his commitment to growth and experimentation throughout his career. With a new text by Ocean Vuong, author of the award-winning "On Earth we're briefly gorgeous" (2019), this volume is a sensitive homage to a canonical artist.
