Musical Landscapes for the Present Day

Special event, Paul Desmarais Theatre, 23 March, 8pm

Upon closer inspection, the apparently stable distinction between the natural world and the human one dissolves into a giant blur—and that blur turns out to be a more interesting place to be. In place of a traditional understanding, what kinds of approaches are needed for this second nature?

Presenting architecture, land art, and music in tandem, this special event is the first collaboration between the CCA and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM). Diller Scofidio + Renfro co-founder Elizabeth Diller presents current thinking on the built environment from the perspective of critical architectural practice, and a screening of Rundown, Jane Crawford and Robert Fiore’s 1969 documentary about Robert Smithson’s pouring works, poses questions of geologic time, entropy, and the industrial materials in the landscape. Kent Nagano and the OSM premiere works by four young composers—Brice Gatinet, Nicolas des Alliers, Simon Gregoric, and James Rubino—inspired by the current CCA exhibition It’s All Happening So Fast: A Counter-History of the Modern Canadian Environment.
