Visiting Scholar Seminar: Gilles Ragot

" De la Fortune Critique du Fonctionnalisme "
Seminar, 4 June 1999

Visiting Scholar Gilles Ragot presents his research about the concept of functionalism in architecture.

The object of my research focused on the emergence conditions of this signifier and the original meanings that condition its future semantic evolution. The use of the term functionalism in the field of architecture is subsequent to the existence of the concept. The study I conducted was designed to examine the reasons and conditions that led to the instrumentalization of the concept by designating it by a specific term.

Gilles Ragot is an assistant professor of history in the School of Architecture and Landscape of Bordeaux since 1994. In 1995, he created the Archives of Architecture and Landscape in Aquitaine which he is responsible. From 1989 to 1994, he was curator of the 20th century Architecture Archives Center of the French Institute of Architecture.

Gilles Ragot was a Visiting Scholar at the CCA in 1999.
