John Smith Archibald was born Dec. 14, 1872 Inverness, Scotland; died 1934, Montreal. He was educated at local public and high schools in Inverness. From 1887-1893 he received his training in the architectural office of William MacIntosh in Inverness. In 1893, he came to Canada and began his Canadian career as a draughtsman and assistant in the office of Edward Maxwell in Montreal. From 1897-1915, he was a partner with Charles Saxe in the firm Saxe and Archibald. After 1915, Archibald practiced alone. J.S. Archibald died on Mar. 2, 1934 in Montreal. After his death, his practice was resumed by his son Ian T. Archibald and H.P. Illsley under the name Archibald and Illsley, and later, with Francis Orr Templeton, as Archibald, Illsley and Templeton.
