Between 1979 and 1981, Alfredo Jaar asked Chileans a deceptively simple question: "Are you happy?" Through private interviews, sidewalk polls and video-recorded forums, among other interventions, Jaar's three-year and seven-phase project, ''Studies on happiness'', addressed a furtive and fearful population living under Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship. It also spoke to a country in transition, as a newly adopted constitution remade Chile through privatisation and other neoliberal reforms. In its varied interventions and direct mode of address, ''Studies on happiness'' functioned as a feedback device meant to catalyse a critical awareness with its blunt questioning. Edward A. Vazquez contextualises Studies on Happiness within Jaar's early production and situates his practice within a Chilean art world haunted by the residues of political violence. This study foregrounds the project's historical embeddedness and the deep political stakes of its apparent sociality, recognising the crucial role that context has always played in Jaar's practice. By turning to the Santiago of Studies on Happiness, Vazquez explores the work's political and art historical environment and provides a wedge to realign current interpretations of Chilean art and hemispheric conceptualism with the openness central to Jaar's project.

Résumé:
How can a political or social movement create so many positive changes, while simultaneously developing negative connotations? Such is the central paradox of feminism for the editors of this book. The dwindling interest of students to continue an academic career after their studies has been called "cooling out" by Burton Clark. The collaborative exhibition project took this term to describe the disinterest of young women toward ideas and forms of feminism, resulting from a lack of palpable aims on the one hand, and the acceptance of existing structures on the other. The exhibition "Cooling Out" examined through the works of contemporary female and male artists the influences of the media, education, and existing social structures on the constitution of a gender identity.

"12 February 1972--I had slept badly. I decided to go out for breakfast, but when I got down to the street, there was no one there, and I thought, Andy, you must be still dreaming. It was like New York at eight in the morning on New Year's Day. Completely deserted. Everything shut. It's my favorite time to be out, actually. I decided to go to my favorite diner, the Star Palace, on 37th and Madison. And there, sitting alone at the window was, believe it or not, Robert Smithson, who I've met a few times. They all think he's a genius. But I still can't get through the stuff he writes in Artforum. I get a headache almost right away." Saul Anton, an Editor-at-Large at Cabinet magazine who has written for Salon and Artforum, among other publications, describes an imaginary encounter between Robert Smithson and Andy Warhol, drifting together for a day through an empty New York City, talking about entropy, glamour, science fiction, cinema and the art of their times. Published in conjunction with les Presses du reel, this highly informative and witty essay on both artists' works in the form of a fiction could be considered a contemporary Platonic Symposium.

Résumé:
Occult practices, seances and magic have traditionally been met with suspicion in the world of high culture, but they are currently getting a fresh look. Turns out, they have long had a quiet influence on art--at least since the mid-1800s. The Message demonstrates this fascinating history with paranormal-influenced paintings, drawings and thought photographs, a term for the phenomenon of imprinting an image from one's mind directly onto a photographic medium--something we've all at least wished we could do... By the early eighteenth century, the occult had found a home in the arts with the advent of Surrealism--in 1933, Andre Breton discussed these inexplicable phenomena in his text, The Automatic Message. This publication borrows its name from Breton's text; and features early-twentieth-century photographs of seances from the archive of parapsychologist Albert von Schrenck-Notzing, which vividly illustrate Breton's ideas

Résumé:
The Frankfurt am Main Staedelschule, and its gallery Portikus, form a leading international center for experimental contemporary art. The Staedelschule was founded in 1817 by Johann Friedrich Staedel for the purpose of introducing students to his prodigous art collection. This publication is authored by contemporary Staedelschule professors and visiting lecturers, including Pamela Lee, Niklas Maak, Jan Verwoert and Okwui Enwezor, who discuss what teaching art means in the context of a contemporary academy, and at what point the art market should be introduced in a student's education. It serves as an example of the kind of discourse available to Staedelschule students, as there is always in residence an impressive international cast of artworld practitioners. This volume is not only functional, however; it also includes a series of new photographs, produced especially for this project, by Wolfgang Tillmans.
