Résumé:
This volume explores the interconnected social, sustainable and spatial principles that underpin the design of more environmentally conscientious buildings and places, illustrated through models, drawings and images of selected key projects by the award-nominated London-based architecture practice Mæ. Each project outlines beneficial strategies for creating more sustainable designs, achieving social equity and working within our planet's limits to elevate the human spirit in the long-term. This book posits strategies to design buildings and places that enrich culture and society, offering insight from researchers and practitioners, as well as richly illustrated documentation of key architectural schemes that put these principles into practice. It is a call to arms for ways to create more environmentally regenerative architecture, applying its ideas to architectural practice worldwide.

Résumé:
Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli designed two important public buildings in the ancient city center of Bressanone, South Tyrol. Just over five hundred meters apart, the two works, the Music School, and the Public Library allowed for reasoning about the city's architecture, exercising a method made up of ideas that look at the peculiarities of places. In a historical period in which the image—by virtue of its visual impact even before its meaning—has taken on the role of the main channel of communication, the Luogo Comune ("common place")—understood both as a meeting space and as the lowest common denominator of an "essential language"—might provide the interval of reflection necessary to start asking some simple, elementary questions about what surrounds us. Within this publishing project, the authors talk about the passage of time, the concept of place and method through the anthropological approach underpinning the photographs taken by Armin Linke in several site visits made in the cities of Treviso, Brixen and Munich, between 2020 and 2021.

Despite the fact that he shaped Venice and its contemporary form, Eugenio Miozzi remains a little-known figure. Yet both locals and visitors experience his legacy every day, in particular when they cross his bridges: from the Ponte della Libertà, to the Ponte dell’Accademia; from the various bridges over the Rio Nuovo, to the exemplary Ponte degli Scalzi. Miozzi, chief engineer of the Commune of Venice from 1931 to 1954, carried out a large number of works and projects, including a vast modernist parking garage and the Casino on the Lido. The prolific engineer-architect played a role in the development of the Teatro La Fenice, made plans for the restoration of the city and the extension of the Tronchetto, and designed a translagoon road and a motorway from Venice to Munich. These projects and the others presented in this illustrated volume represent Miozzi’s tireless efforts to guarantee the city’s survival by combining its centuries-old traditions with a spirit of innovation.

Résumé:
This volume contains work, both built and unbuilt, both large-scale and small, designed in the 1990s by the firm of Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects. Alan Ritchie has worked with Johnson since 1969; the firm was established in 1994. The projects shown may be divided into two groups. Johnson’s interest in the past decade in sculptural form - or the way in which sculptural form translates into architectural presence - has led to designs that involve both new kinds of shapes and new ways of using classic architectural form to make entirely new works of architecture. Such sculptural works, for the most part small in scale, include Da Monsta, the new visitors pavilion at Johnson’s famed Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, and a spectacular folly consisting of four pyramids made of chain-link fencing at an estate in New York State. Simultaneously, the firm has continued its ongoing work with larger projects, such as a 27-story apartment tower for Tribeca, in lower Manhattan; the Cathedral of Hope in Dallas; an addition to the Amon Carter Museum, originally designed by Johnson in 1961, in Forth Worth, Texas; and a proposal for the architecture school at Texas A University in College Station. Also included are a pair of proposals for La Défense in Paris; three large houses; a new china design for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York; and a new public clock, sponsored by Movado, for Lincoln Center. Introduction by Paul Goldberger.

Résumé:
Presentations and analyses of Kahn's essential realized buildings are the focal point of this book, from the early work, which has gained recognition only in recent years, to the large-scale projects for the capital buildings of Bangladesh in Dhaka and the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad. The book's starting point is the reconstruction of the design process of the buildings according to their plans and elevations. Kahn's distinctive modernism, exemplified in projects such as the Richards Laboratories in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, is traced to its most simple and basic geometric shapes and is developed in fascinating complexity. The drawings, made exclusively for this publication, are combined with previously unpublished photographs.
