Bombs Start Garden

#63. Bombs Start Garden

Seeds

Seed bombs are mixtures of clay, humus, and seeds designed to sustain seed growth – like the yolk of an egg – until the plant can interact with the environment.
The Green Guerillas were a well-known group of New York City gardening activists led by Liz Christy. In 1973, after targeting a vacant lot on Bowery Street for seed bombing, the guerillas approached the municipal government to obtain use of the land. They received it the following year and built the first community garden in New York City. The Green Guerillas also created gardens in window boxes and tree pits in the area.
