CCA Director Mirko Zardini will participate in the 31st seminar on architectural history organized by the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio. This year’s theme, Architecture and Failure, will explore interrupted or unbuilt architectural projects from ancient times to the present.
The talk, entitled “Great Expectations: A Story of Post-war Architecture,” measures three large-scale failures against the large scale of their ambition. Zardini recounts the many kinds of failure—a failure in time and place, a failure of a particular industrial object, and a failure of media representation—within narratives about the Fun Palace, a project by Joan Littlewood and Cedric Price for a new leisure society that roamed homeless throughout 1960s England and Scotland; the Futuro House by Matti Suuronen, a project for an affordable and mass produced plastic architecture that could not survive the 1973 oil crisis and tripling in the price of plastic; and public housing projects emerging from the American Housing Act of 1949 that envisioned a basic standard of living for everyone but collapsed under the economic decline and racist housing policies of American postwar cities.
