A traditional gathering place for Mi’gmaq and Wolastoqiyik communities, a site of extraction for lumber and energy, a growing center of tourism, and a place of ecological flux; the Mitis River is marked by complexity and rapid change. How can we document the extensive network of factors surrounding such a river? ‘How Do You Call This Place’ is an event that explores the possibilities of community engagement as a tool for generating knowledge about place. Each in their own way, participants will create a record of the Mitis River through a collective ‘fishing log’. From food sharing to craft making to storytelling, this event invites residents and visitors alike to enter a sphere of exchange where they will reflect on what this place means to them.
This event is taking place in the context of River, Shore, Land: Ecological Futures at the Jardins de Métis, a three-year project undertaken by the CCA in collaboration with the Jardins de Métis/Reford Gardens as part of the CCA Master’s Students Program.
