Summary:
Dan Graham (1942), one of the major neo avant-garde figures since the Second World War, is internationally recognized for his work in public spaces. Graham was invited to Como to take part in the centenary celebration of the birth of Giuseppe Terragni. For the occasion, he installed a pavilion entitled "Half square/half crazy" on the square in front of the Casa del Fascio. For Graham, the pavilion is a tool to critically fathom modern architecture. It is an instrument for studying the rapport between the interior (private) and exterior (public) environment as well as a way to examine the relationship of the individual to the urban scheme. His architectural structure moves from contemplative object to meeting point: a place of exchange and reflection. This volume presents an exhaustive documentation of the Como pavilion together with a selection of recent works by Dan Graham and two interviews with the artist. The dvd included records the course of the Como pavilion from its construction to inauguration.

Summary:
''Dan Graham, some rockin’'' is a compilation of fifteen interviews (two of them previously unpublished) between Dan Graham and artist friends, architects, musicians, art critics, and curators from various parts of our world. In these interviews Graham’s intense interest in and observation of cultural phenomena such as rock music, urbanism, architecture, corporate culture, and art world politics and their historical development overlaps and interferes with the articulated interest of the interviewers in Graham’s art, sense of humor, attitude, and point of view in regard of a huge variety of topics. Two essays, besides the ''Introduction,'' are added to this compilation: the essay ''The museum in evolution'' by Dan Graham, and an essay by the editor, Gregor Stemmrich, on the development and far reaching implications of Graham’s art.

Summary:
Dan Graham is among the most influential of the Conceptual artists who emerged in America during the mid 1960s. A pioneer in performance and video art in the 1970s, Graham later turned his attention to architectural projects designed for social interaction in public spaces, among them The Children’s Pavilion (1989) with Jeff Wall. Writing has always been a major aspect of Graham’s work. His texts range from early Conceptual art pieces inserted in mass-market magazines, to writing on his fellow artists, to analyses of popular culture, from Dean Martin to the post-Punk era. Well-known also among architects and urban theorists, during the 1990s Graham has been offered major public commissions throughout North America and Europe. London-based curator Mark Francis discusses with the artist how his public participation-based work has evolved. Brussels-based critic Birgit Pelzer draws on her extensive knowledge of Graham’s work and writings. New York-based architectural theorist Beatriz Colomina focuses on Graham’s Alteration to a Suburban House (1978). The artist has chosen an extract from the science fiction novel Ubik by Philip K Dick, whose writings were a formative influence. A substantial Artist’s Writings section, key to understanding Dan Graham, completes the book.

This is an artist book that documents seven early performances by Dan Graham taking place from 1969 to 1977 with notes, transcripts, or photographs for each work. Originally published in 1978, and produced here in facsimile form, the publication focuses on several key works that interrogate or undermine the psychological and social space created by, or between, individuals inside the performance venue. Like most of Graham’s work, they also serve as a critique of cultural norms, with many of the performances utilizing quotidian, social acts that are amplified over time.

Summary:
Dan Graham, one of North America’s most important contemporary artists, is best known today for his sculptural works and installations. His photographic works are generally not so well known, despite the fact that he first became famous for his photographic series Homes for America, pictures of typical American suburbia. To this day the theme of architecture and its surfaces in the context of postmodern everyday culture represents an extremely important facet of his work. This publication presents new photographs by Dan Graham together with original photographs from the Homes for America series. The new images exhibit stark similarities to the old pictures, as they were taken in the same locations, the same deserts of suburban streets and housing that Graham photographed in the sixties. Creating a fascinating, multilayered reference system of repetitions and differences, both spatially as well as temporally, it raises questions about architecture and public space and their function in society.

Summary:
This title, published in 1979 and long since out of print, now appears as a reprint from Lars Muller Publishers. The original book was released in the series of publications Source Materials of the Contemporary Arts initiated by Kasper Konig and produced by the Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The publication represents an important document in Dan Graham's artistic examination of the video medium. Graham's installations and performances with video from the years 1970 - 78 are documented with numerous illustrations, photos, and brief descriptions. In addition, the volume contains an essay by the artist in which he examines the various possibilities and forms of representation offered by the video medium, and draws the boundaries between these and representational spaces in television, film, or architecture. The book also offers contributions by Michael Asher and Dara Birnbaum, as well as an annex with a biography and bibliography.
