Summary:
In 1966, Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) conceived a new type of work that he described as “drawings without drawing,” in which he replaced the act of drawing itself by using various ways of folding paper. In 1969, he started to regularly produce what he called Folds, first as gifts to friends, then as works to be distributed by his dealers. In 1971 he added the Rips, drawings(...)

In 1971 he added the Rips, drawings made of ripped paper. LeWitt developed this extended approach to drawing from ripping papers of various sizes and colors to working with city maps and aerial photos of Florence, Manhattan and Chicago from which he removed various areas. This systematic approach, on which so much of LeWitt’s work is famously based, was also applied to the Folds and the Rips, and so they tended to be created in series. The book presents these works for the first time, along with a historical essay by Dieter Schwarz and full-color reproductions of the Folds and the Rips.

Summary:
Trix and Robert Haussmann are well known both in Switzerland and internationally for their vast contribution to design and interiors. Living and working together since the '60s, symbiotically creating and also sharing wonderful interiors filled with works of art and beautiful objects, one can think of them—and the spaces they inhabit—as an ever-evolving 'double self-portrait'. The Haussmanns have had close ties to the avant-garde of their time, have followed the various trends and artistic currents and have actively participated in the local scenes of Zurich or Bern. Through documenting their numerous exchanges and conversations with artists, dealers and creative kindred spirits, this book is a testimony of their lifelong interest in the visual arts, their active, enthusiastic and witty involvement with the Swiss art scene as well as their rather playful commitment to it.

Summary:
For years, Gerhard Richter (born 1931) hardly even spoke of his own drawings (which were rarely if ever featured in his museum exhibitions or numerous publications), and few knew how frequently or consistently he produced works on paper. On the heels of his major traveling retrospective, this volume compiles around 100 works including drawings, watercolors and an ink-on-paper series. The drawings range from ballpoint studies of exhibition spaces to delicate sketches of a woman breastfeeding, or the folds in a child’s socks. Also included is the 1971 “Two Sculptures for a Room by Palermo,” which consists of painted bronze busts of Palermo and Richter. Revealing a lesser-known aspect of Richter’s work, and affirming his devotion to drawing, this catalogue gives an intimate view into the mental and aesthetic processes of one of our greatest contemporary painters.

Schütte’s first forays into imaginary or utopian architecture were scale models of rooms in which one might live and work. After a gap of 20 years, Schütte returned to the architectural model, producing light pavilions out of wood and studio leftovers, as well as commercial and public buildings. Houses provides a comprehensive survey of Schütte’s architectural models, from his early experiments through to his current design projects.

Summary:
The American Fred Sandback (1943–2003), regarded as one of the major sculptors of his generation, had from the beginning of his art career initially used drawings to formulate on paper his ideas of sculptural volumes. Soon he went from depicting isolated elements to thinking of sculpture in relationship to space and to exploring its possibilities on paper. In the 1980s, Sandback expanded his drawing vocabulary to include work in acrylic, in the pochoir technique or in pastel, which look much more pictorial in contrast to his earlier works on paper. The issue was now less about conceiving sculptures and more about modulating space. As regards sculpture, Sandback no longer thought of it as a given spatial volume, but as a sensual phenomenon per se, which he explored in the drawing. In his late drawings, Sandback moved away from the conditions of a coherent space in order to conceive of sculptures that are boundless from all sides. Only a specific section of the whole is intimated in the drawing, for which Sandback invented unusual techniques: actual incisions instead of drawn lines, for instance, or painterly traces on transparent film. This publication of Sandback’s drawings assembles works from over thirty years, supplemented by sculpture.
