Summary:

Summary:
This first volume in a series examining intersections between architectural theory and practice addresses environmental crisis and spatial justice through four essays. Marc Angélil and Cary Siress trace the evolution from Technocene, Thermocene, Plantationocene, to Entropocene, Capitalocene, and Urbicene. Elke Krasny reflects on scales of care within social justice and decolonization. Contributors explore the "Curated Diner" as a planning intervention. Finally, Space Caviar advocates for a non-extractive approach to architecture as part of a broader economic transformation. These interdisciplinary contributions aim to reshape the discourse and discuss equitable, inclusive, and intergenerational practices.

Summary:
Implying always a beginning, teaching is about initiating excitement. It entails the deployment of pleasure, the built-up of passion, and obsession vis-à-vis a particular field of endeavour, the grounds on which a discipline operates, and its intellectual as well as physical practices. Notwithstanding the optimistic implications of such a claim, teaching inevitably involves a contradictory bias both in favour as well as against the discipline at issue, promoting an understanding of its regulating principles while at the same time questioning the seemingly secure bases on which it is presumed to stand. Whereas teaching is affirmative, it simultaneously introduces a distancing from the very subject matter that it promotes.

Welcome to the 21st century in Swiss architecture. An engrossing collection of interviews with Swiss superstar architects like Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Valerio Olgiati, Mario Botta and Luigi Snozzi offers a window into their plans, obsessions, thoughts and predictions. What are they working on? Where are they going next? Nine interviewers talk to 30 leading Swiss architects, both established and cutting-edge, about the future of architecture, their increasingly complex relations with clients and the public sphere, and their role in the international dialog on what architecture means in the early 21st century. Over the course of the conversations, these architects present not only their positions on the constructive, conceptual and aesthetic dimensions of architecture, but also their projections for the future of the discipline.

Summary:
Economic strengthening and the developments associated with it, such as population growth, rural flight, and the explosive growth of cities, pose enormous challenges for city planners in urban centers throughout the world. But clumsy "test-tube" urban plans like those developed for China in part by German planners have shown that different standards and rules apply in the non-European world than in Europe s organically developed urban structures. This manual analyzes contemporary urban phenomena in economic growth regions using the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Abeba as an example, and presents a catalogue of sustainable strategies for city planning practice in the Second and Third Worlds. In the process, it provides planners with generally applicable methods and tools that are usable at the design stage and equip them to develop and deploy dynamic planning and project management processes. To this end, it illuminates such topical subjects as the changing agrarian and industrial landscape, the activation of urban wastelands, and the increasing density of urban hubs. In addition, it uses real projects as examples to highlight avenues for practical implementation.

The images are organized according to thirteen keywords, spatial configurations that characterize agps’s core design concepts and summarize central elements of their ideas. At the same time, they are terms that define the formal presence of their designs. The result offers multifaceted and inspiring insight into the work of an international firm that proves just how important spatial constellations are for the formulation of good architecture.

Summary:
Since the 1950s, Egypt has developed a dozen new towns in the desert around Cairo. This book offers the first systematic exploration of these cities, analyzing their urban form, their promise, and their shortcomings. Originally intended to satisfy growing demand for housing, most of the desert towns have never been completed. Taking this permanent condition of emerging urban development at face value, the study aims to identify the as-yet dormant potential of these towns through a series of design scenarios. Cairo Desert Cities underscores the value of re-engaging in modernist town planning, for wiping away the dust of past failures may uncover the contours of future opportunities. With over 300 illustrations, this clothbound edition is an engaging and visually rich introduction to the urban development of Greater Cairo, the largest urban area in Africa, and the practices that have shaped it.
