On the images we see abstract impressions of green and yellow leaves pressed against the plastic sheeting of the greenhouses. On top of that we see strips of copper wiring that keep the plastic sheets in position. It is the first series of images in Vanoverberghe’s work that solely puts the focus on the natural aspect of our surroundings. The work is a continuation in Vanoverberghe’s research to the material in which he presents his photographs. The visual atmosphere of the works constantly change due to the light that is captured or reflected by the brass material.

Summary:
‘Conference of the Birds’ shows an outtake from an analysis of the correlation between time and place and of the historical Iranian landscape. How do places appear and disappear? How do we attach meaning to a certain site and in what way photography can deal with deconstructed icons in comparison to the (a-)historical palm tree sticking out its tongue? A small desert(...)

A small desert village has been photographed obsessively and captured from every angle possible. Elements are positioned in the frame so that they are repeated in the next. The photographs move in closely to the landscape of a palm tree village. The village is small and serene. Palm trees appear all over the place, they are burned, bend, dry and dead. They resemble pillars and artefacts that are left behind on various historical sites and they can be associated with land art installations.

The work originates from his interest in how time changes the landscape and the objects that can be found within. Vanoverberghe is questioning how we look at artifacts, icons and our (nearby) historical surroundings. In ‘1099’ the focus of the work is mainly put on the materiality that can be found at several historical locations. The book shows diverse elements dealing with a notion of the constant evolution of history.

Summary:
This publication by Sybren Vanoverberghe is a continuation of his visual research on artefacts and non ordinary sites. Its focus on the site of the port and the industrial landscape around it. In previous projects, Vanoverberghe shows statues and pillars made out of stone, ruins in desolated landscapes or nature in a constant state of transformation. For ‘Sandcastles And Rubbish’ a change in materiality took place, a change wherein Vanoverberghe investigates ‘new’ artefacts of our time. Rusted and bend steel, gravel pits, sturdy and raw structures flirt with composition and elegancy. Photographic works are presented alongside artefacts or ‘objets trouvés’. Questions are raised about the value of an object and how value changes as time passes by. Vanoverberghes work is characterised by a constant flux of place and time. Opening of the solo exhibition and book launch ‘Sandcastles and Rubbish’ at Keteleer Gallery opens the 4th of December in Antwerp. The exhibition will be on show until the 15th of January.
