Summary:
What are the unique characteristics that make a house Colonial or Craftsman, Modern or Deco, or any of the other approximately 20 styles of domestic architecture common in the United States? At a time of near-obsessive attention to home design and renovation, this compact, easily accessible guide - the only book of its kind with all colour photography - makes the identification of house styles a breeze. Each style is described by author William Morgan, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated architectural historian, in a short historical summary, alongside a list of its distinguishing features. Multiple examples of each house style are provided - the book includes 350 houses from more than 40 states - so the reader can see the region-specific variations. Complementing the beautiful colour photographs is a selection of line drawings highlighting each style's key attributes. Both at the desk and in the field, for a wide audience of discerning house hunters, homeowners, and realtors; architects, builders, and students; and the ever-increasing public with a seemingly insatiable curiosity about residential design, this elegant, informative, portable volume will be an invaluable resource for years to come.

Summary:
The Cape Cod cottage has been one of America's most popular home styles for almost four hundred years. While a perennial domestic favorite, historians have long ignored the modest Cape Cod, relegating it to a vernacular footnote along with barns and mills. In "The Cape Cod cottage" architectural historian and photographer William Morgan places this uniquely American house—a remarkable combination of necessity and tradition—in its historical context and makes a compelling argument for the reassessment of its place in the history of American architecture. "The Cape Cod cottage" follows the uniquely American house type from its earliest beginnings in the colonial period, through its spread across New England, to its embrace as a suburban ideal in the twentieth century, and its reinterpretation by contemporary architects. Historical images of lost Capes augment new photographs taken specifi- cally for the book. Foreword by Daniel V. Scully.

Summary:
Two hundred and fifty Leisurama houses were built at Culloden Shores in Montauk, Long Island. Most of the homes have since been converted to year -round occupancy, and with very few exceptions, all have been enlarged and redecorated, while the once barren shore is now forested. In a sweet paradox, these once very affordable homes - in the 1960s, for as little as $590 down and $73 a month, you could walk into Macy's and leave with a fully furnished house - that were looked down upon by more well-to-do neighbors are now desirable and expensive, even "collectable." Their rich legacy lives on in the affordable pages of Leisurama. The different houses are shown each 2 on a page, followed by a map of their location on the beach, as well as the detailed presentation of their interior design in pictures and words, and original documents. Photo Index, Notes on Plates, Bibliographical notes
