Or is it the absence of the sound created by humans – the kind of deep stillness you might experience in a remote mountain landscape covered in snow, far away from the bustle of human life? Summary:
In our busy, noisy world, we may find ourselves longing for silence. But what is silence exactly? Is it the total absence of sound? Or is it the absence of the sound created by humans – the kind of deep stillness you might experience in a remote mountain landscape covered in snow, far away from the bustle of human life? When we listen closely, silence reveals a neglected reality. Neither empty nor singular, silence is instead plentiful and multiple. In this book, eco-acoustic historian Jérôme Sueur allows us to discover a vast landscape of silences which trigger the full gamut of our emotions: anxiety, awe and peace. He takes us from vistas resplendent with full and rich natural silences to the everyday silence of predators as they stalk their prey. To explore silences in animal behaviour and ecology is to discover a counterpoint to the acoustic diversity of the natural world, throwing into sharp relief the grating reverberations of the human activity which threatens it. It is to attune ourselves to a world that our human insensitivities have closed off to us, to take a moment simply to breathe and listen to the place of silence in nature.

Summary:
What is the difference between hearing and listening? Does sound have consciousness? Can you imagine listening beyond the edge of your own imagination? In response to the anti-war movements of the 1960s, pioneering musician and composer Pauline Oliveros began to expand the way she made music, experimenting with meditation, movement and activism in her compositions. Fascinated by the role that sound and consciousness play in our daily lives, Oliveros developed a series of Sonic Meditations that would eventually lead to the creation of Deep Listening – a practice for healing open to all, rooted in her musicianship. Quantum Listening is a manifesto for listening as activism. Oliveros’ futuristic vision, blending technology and spirituality, shows how Deep Listening is the foundation for a radically transformed social matrix: one in which compassion and peace form the basis for our actions in the world.

Summary:
In our image-saturated contemporary society, sight often eclipses other senses that are vital to understanding the unseen dynamics of our sensory relationship with environments. As a counter-project to the hegemony of images, the act of listening opens up new possibilities for exploring both built and natural environments and moving our attention to granting a voice to more-than-human agencies. "Ecotones" showcases investigations on the relevance of sound in territorial studies. It is developed as a curated collection of texts from various disciplines and practitioners exploring spaces, territories, and ecologies through sonic endeavors. With a variety of formats, from essays and fiction pieces to situated case studies, Ecotones narrates sound as a medium, the act of listening as a political tool, and sonic experiments.

''The political voice'’ is the subject of the second volume of ''Sonic Urbanism'' publications. This volume explores the political voice as a particular sonic phenomenon, asking how and where it is possible to have a '‘voice'’ in urban politics, the relationship between material and metaphorical readings of political speech, and how voices can be amplified or silenced in cities. Responses explored vocal contestations and noisy citizenship, technologies that transmit or transform voices, and the ways that sound art and experimental music stage collective voicings.

Summary:

Summary:
The legacy of radio and the arts has spawned many forms of radical culture over the years, from early Modernist notions of the "Wireless imagination" and its subsequent vernacular tongues to Acoustic Ecology's call for "Radical radio". This contemporary history of radical radio addresses the transformation of this broadcast medium by recent breakthroughs in digital technology - from digital streaming to web radio and podcasting - paying special attention to the "transmission arts" in culture and politics. It includes creative and critical essays by historians, media theorists, radio producers and activists, coupled with artistic and audio projects by current avant-gardists Kabir Carter, Brandon LaBelle, James Sey and others. While "Modern" radio stitched together an electronic network by expanding outward, today's radio may fulfill Marshall McLuhan's idea of the global "extended nervous system" by networking individual lives on more of a cellular level. According to the authors, radio is no longer out there, in the ether, but inside us, transmitting intense stratifications of culture. Comes with audio CD
