Without losing sight of a rich local tradition, the many different architecture studios of Madrid -like Ábalos and Herreros, Tuñón and Mansilla, Soriano and Palacios, Cero9, Acebo and Alonso, Aranguren and Gallegos, Nieto and Sobejano- are displaying a much fresher and more active approach in terms of defining new advances for contemporary Spanish architecture than their compatriots of the Barcelona School. As part of this, Eduardo Arroyo and the members of the Madrid studio no.mad arquitectos occupy an important place within the new Spanish architecture. Despite having built very little (a day nursery in Sondika, a square and a stadium in Barakaldo, and a single-family house on the outskirts of Madrid), Eduardo Arroyo is a key figure for understanding the new directions that not only Spanish, but also European, architecture is taking. This new 41st issue of the magazine 2G presents all his studio’s built work and some of its more recent projects, a total oeuvre that moves between the fiercest pragmatism and rigour, a playful geometry, the value of architecture as part of the landscape, and constructional responsibility.

Celle-ci est inspirée de la célèbre place médiévale de la ville de Lucca, la piazza anfiteatro, qui épouse la forme de l’ancien amphithéâtre dont elle occupe le site. Elle a été dessinée par un grand architecte de Parme, Pier Carlo Bontempi. De forme ovale, elle accueille des commerces mais aussi des appartements qui donnent sur sa superbe fontaine en pierre et sur de calmes patios intérieurs. Elle constitue un nouveau pôle d’animation de la ville nouvelle vers lequel convergent une galerie commerciale et des rues. A proximité immédiate de la nouvelle place de la Mairie avec laquelle elle s’articule, elle forme un ensemble qui témoigne de la renaissance de l’urbanisme en France. L’architecte Pier Carlo Bontempi, architecte et designer diplômé de l’Université de Florence, a installé son agence dans une superbe maison de campagne à proximité de Parme. De nombreuses publications ont été consacrées à ses créations et il a été lauréat de nombreux concours. En 2000, il a reçu le prestigieux prix américain John Burgee. Il a remporté le concours pour la réalisation de la place de Toscane en 2002.

Ce sont les jeunes architectes japonais, attirés par le prestige des textes de Le Corbusier, qui ont donné le départ d'un formidable intérêt pour l'agence de la rue de Sèvres ; cet intérêt pour l'architecte était d'ailleurs sélectif, il laissait de côté aussi bien l'urbanisme que l'œuvre plastique du dessinateur ou du peintre, et combinait plusieurs images successives de Le Corbusier, qui était d'abord, dans les années 1920 et 1930, un " jeune héros ", puis, après 1945, un " maître " du modernisme, et enfin, l'architecte de référence d'une nouvelle approche de l'espace qu'au Japon, en raison des conditions d'une intense démarche de modernisation, on expérimente avec passion. Jusqu'à présent cependant cette relation de Le Corbusier avec le Japon n'avait pas fait l'objet d'une étude. A côté des grandes sagas, celle de Le Corbusier en Amérique latine, celle de Le Corbusier en URSS, la relation de Le Corbusier avec le Japon était demeurée une page blanche, qui attendait son approche, son écriture, ses interprétations. Ils ont cependant créé des méthodes de développement du projet originales et sont les auteurs d'une réflexion approfondie des échanges entre architecture chinoise et architecture européenne. Cette monographie, qui leur est dédiée, et qui offre un large espace à leurs textes, se focalise sur les choix architecturaux, existentiels et techniques du couple, et plus particulièrement sur les constructions expérimentales élaborées pour leur propre usage, comme leur maison-atelier de Brigue et leur chalet Trigon (1955), parfaites illustrations de leurs préoccupations constructives et de l'ensemble de leur œuvre. Parallèlement à leur activité d'architectes, les époux Wenger ont poursuivi une activité d'enseignants. Heidi porte une très grande attention à l'écriture, et Peter a consacré de longues recherches à des variantes de structures comprimées-tendues, " tensegrity " ; sa production photographique de grande qualité éclaire l'ensemble de la démarche du couple.
