Summary:
"Proto Vernacular" is both art object and architectural meditation, a richly visual and philosophical publication by Pezo von Ellrichshausen. It explores architecture’s most primordial tension, tracing the shift from anonymous building traditions to authored design. Bringing together "Vernacular" drawings (pencil studies of archetypal buildings) and "Proto" paintings, the book reflects on origins, repetition, and architecture’s desire to return to a “first” state. A thoughtful text on the making of Luna House reveals how seclusion, material necessity, and the interruptions of daily life shape architectural thought. The book also features essays by Hans Ibelings and Pezo von Ellrichshausen.

Summary:
Peter Celsing (1920–74) belongs to the small group of Swedish modernist architects, including luminaries such as Gunnar Asplund (1885–1940) and Sigurd Lewerentz (1885–1975), who have rightly attracted attention beyond the country’s borders. How Celsing approached and carried out his commissions testifies to a great understanding of architecture as an applied art, where function and economy are important parameters. At the same time, during a major shift in the construction industry from more small-scale and artisanal to large-scale and prefabricated, Celsing managed the feat of running his projects with artistic integrity. John Håkansson’s black and white photographs, taken in the mid-1990s, capture the essence of Celsing’s buildings. In many cases, the images are now a valuable document of that era, since some of the buildings have changed, and not always in a favorable way. In this beautiful volume, supplemented by insightful texts contributed by architect Staffan Henriksson and artist Maria Lantz, Håkansson’s skillful photography forms a loving and sensitive portrait of Celsing’s architecture.

Summary:
To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Alvar Aalto, one of the most important figures in architectural history, this exhibition will showcase the extensive body of work he created with his two wives, Aino and Elissa. The Aaltos revolutionised the humanist aspect of modern architecture by grounding it in an organic connection to nature, producing countless designs in the process. Between the two world wars, the Aaltos helped to create an identity for the young Finnish nation. They participated in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture and the Paris and New York exhibitions and designed masterpieces such as the Viipuri Library (now in Russia), Villa Mairea in Finland, Baker House in the United States and Maison Carré in France. Following the introduction of antibiotics, their Paimio Sanatorium set an example to the world by demonstrating how spaces could be made healthier and more accessible, through studies of solar incidence, natural ventilation and silent washbasins. Sanatorium is one of the thirteen Aalto-designed projects currently proposed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The book accompanying the exhibition features a preface by António Choupina, director of the Architecture Department at the Serralves Foundation and curator of the exhibition, and Jukka Savolainen, director of the Alvar Aalto Museum. It also includes contributions from architect Álvaro Siza and Juhani Pallasmaa, architect, professor emeritus at Aalto University, Helsinki, and writer.

Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was a giant of Italian Modernism, contributing to a multitude of fields: architecture, industrial design, furniture design, education, art criticism and publishing. From 1923 to 1930, Ponti served as the artistic director of the now cult Italian tableware manufacturer Richard Ginori. In 1928, he founded the internationally renowned magazine Domus, which, apart from a break in the 1940s, he continued to direct for the rest of his life. In the postwar era, Ponti and his associates Antonio Fornaroli and Alberto Rosselli shaped the architectural image of Milan but were also active across the globe from Caracas to Tehran, Denver, Islamabad and Eindhoven. "More than one: Gio Ponti" delves into the many components of Ponti’s creative contribution to the 20th century and traces his enduring influence in Italy and across the globe.

For her new book, she traveled to Bangladesh with Iwan Baan to visit the buildings created there as well as her women's empowerment project, Dipdii Textiles. Dutch photographer Iwan Baan is best known for his images that show life and interactions in architecture. In Bangladesh, he created intense and sensual images that, between documentation and art, bear witness to what architecture can achieve when it is not about representation but about social benefit.

Summary:
On croit connaître Jean Prouvé.

Summary:
From Vaux-le-Vicomte to Versailles, the buildings of Louis Le Vau shaped the image of French court society. None, however, has had as dramatic an effect as Mazarin's Collège (1661-70), the Parisian landmark that now houses the Institut de France. In this first English-language book on Louis XIV's celebrated architect, Hilary Ballon deftly portrays the brilliance and controversy of Le Vau's late career through an exploration of this masterpiece, a hybrid of baroque and classical styles. She tracks the design and construction of the Collège on the basis of splendid drawings, fully illustrated here, integrating into this account previously unknown dimensions of Le Vau's creative personality, his financial entanglements, and his feuds with government leaders. The story of the Collège begins in 1661 with the death of Cardinal Mazarin, who left an extravagant sum of money for a school to be built in his memory. Le Vau responded with an ambitious architectural tribute intended to launch the development of Paris in a new artistic direction. As Ballon shows, many personal factors figured into the final product, including Le Vau's activities as a real estate developer and entrepreneur, and his explosive response to the Italian baroque master Gianlorenzo Bernini, who visited Paris in 1665. The project ended up significantly over budget, and officials charged Le Vau shortly after his death with embezzling funds. The chief minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, led the attack on Le Vau, turning the ethical scandal into an aesthetic crusade to maintain a "classical" look for central Paris. By relating the intriguing context in which the Collège was created, Ballon explains why traditional definitions of the baroque and classical styles have failed to offer a cohesive understanding of the building. Her examination of the elements informing Le Vau's personal style and his relationship with Colbert brings into sharper focus the phenomenon of royal patronage and opens a new perspective on the development of French classicism at a turning point in Parisian architectural history.
