Water is both a friend and an enemy of Rotterdam. Rotterdam was founded near the water. Thanks to the water Rotterdam has a major port. Everyone in the Netherlands knows the image of the skyline of Rotterdam near the river. The fact that water can also be a threat to the city becomes clear in the title of the second International Architecture Biennale: ‘The Flood’. Rotterdam Waterstad 2035 is the joint project of three parties for the second International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. The content is created on the basis of a joint vision by experts of various disciplines. Apart from this book, there is a model and an exhibition. The model is a representation of 'Rotterdam Waterstad 2035' made by Werkplaats Vincent de Rijk. The model is part of an exhibition called ‘The Dutch Water City’ (‘De Hollandse Waterstad’). The publication Rotterdam Waterstad 2035 presents a complete overview of all the results of the project.

Summary:
In an age of diminishing natural resources, architects and their clients need to know about an environmentally sustainable alternative to new construction: new life for old buildings. This book presents six case-study buildings, each more than a generation old, that were on the brink of oblivion. Mitchell Giurgola Architects worked closely with the client to determine how each project could be salvaged by incorporating updated program elements to serve a new generation of users. All six case studies present in detail how each project is analyzed, from its energy use and curtain-wall performance to its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and structural stability. The buildings often expand in size, with a seamless melding of new and old. Contemporary curtain walls not only improve building performance, but also lend a fresh aesthetic appeal. The results are born-again buildings created for a fraction of the cost and consuming far fewer materials than, a new facility built from scratch. Today, our cities and suburbs are peppered with buildings of the same era as those profiled here that are on the brink of failure and are excellent candidates for rebirth. Mitchell Giurgola documents a new, more sustainable approach to design and construction that builds on the past, and makes the old better than new.

Summary:
This publication brings together the manifold, international and multidisciplinary contributions of the GameSetandMatch II conference - the architecture co-laboratory, directed by Kas Oosterhuis, professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of technology, the Netherlands. It adresses contemporary and future changes within and across the boundaries of digitally driven architectural and design practices. The notion of architecture as a co-laboratory accentuates this strong devotion to experimentation and collaboration. In so doing it offers a kaleidoscopic view of, rather than a defines perspective on current developments in the digital design domain. The authors of the essays and papers included in this book come from very diverse backgrounds ranging from architecture and design to technology and engineering as well as computer sciences and humanities. An interlaced series of three thematic areas - 'Play', 'Geometry ++' and 'Open Source' - will relate diverse sources of knowledge and enable the reader to cross reference, question, recontextualize, and even create new connections among the content presented. "GameSetandMatch II" includes contributions from Robert Aish, Ole Bouman, Raoul Bunschoten, Bernard Cache, Jan Edler and Tim Edler, Georg Flachbart, John Frazer, Mark Goulthorpe, Branko Kolarevic, Anne Nigten, Marcos Novak, Kas Oosterhuis, Antonino Saggio, Katie Salen, Norbert Streitz, Tom Verebes, Peter Weibel and many more.

Summary:
Architecture has become an increasingly multidisciplinary profession, where concepts, techniques, and materials are readily shared with other disciplines, and the many ways an architect can define and address a design problem has redefined the role of the architect. "Situating" implies a wide-ranging approach to all phases of design, creating a more dynamic understanding of site and open-ended work that both acknowledges existing conditions and allows for mutability and change over time. In "Young architects 7: situating", young architects were asked to broaden the concept of "siting" to include the "situating" of an architectural problem. The winners of the competition—Greg Kochanowski, ROEWU Architecture, Lateral Architecture, Dan Hisel Design, LinOldham Office, and Interboro—responded to these questions with answers as distinct as they are creative.

Summary:
This study provides an in-depth overview of the development of a national identity in Romanian art, architecture and design at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. By exploring the political, cultural and artistic forces that molded the emerging art scene, the text represents the first synthetic attempt to examine the interrelationship of the Romanian arts as a whole. Kallestrup also makes available relevant unpublished materials which highlight the international significance of artists who were previously little known outside of Romania.
