C’est en effet par la mobilité, à la fois l’amour du voyage et la découverte de nouveaux espaces, que se distingue Helen McNicoll et ce, à une époque où les femmes issues de milieux aisés sont le plus souvent confinées à la domesticité. Privilégiant la peinture en plein air et les recherches sur les effets de lumière et d’atmosphère, effets nourris par ses nombreux voyages, elle a pour sujets de prédilection les scènes de la vie quotidienne, bien qu’elle parvienne à en donner une interprétation distincte des impressionnistes en ce qu’elle est centrée davantage sur le labeur féminin.
