This book contains five essays about the contemporary Japanese house illustrated with a selection of designs by young architects. The domestic space becomes a symbol of the ability to adapt to new cultural and technological patterns. The designers provide brilliant meditations on the continuous exchange between body and space in a country that readily accepts change and looks forward to the future where buildings are not expected to last forever. Summary:
Modernisation in the 20th century has deeply transformed Japanese society, bringing economic wealth and social well-being, but also increasing divisions and specialisation in society. This transformation has been increasingly questioned in recent years, and finds expression in architectural projects. The catalogue for the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Momoyo Kaijima, one of the founders of Atelier Bow-Wow, this volume examines the role of architectural drawings in this reappraisal, as they form the basis on which a common approach in the design of individualised yet shared environments in today’s globalised society can be formulated. It proposes architectural ethnography as a methodology of social engagement.

Summary:
In ''Japanese Creativity'', Japanese architect Yuichiro Edagawa sets out to try to determine the roots of a particularly Japanese architectural style by analyzing a wide variety of exemplary buildings from the sixth century to the present. Developing his theory out of close observation and practical knowledge and constantly shifting between historical and more recent examples, Edagawa isolates what he considers to be the distinctive characteristics of Japanese architectural creativity and composition: intimacy with nature, importance of materials, bipolarity and diversity, asymmetry, devotion to small space and an appreciation for organic form. He finds these qualities across Japanese design, and from these extrapolates a theory of Japanese architectural creation.

Summary:
Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, "A Japanese Constellation" focuses on the work of a small group of architects and designers influenced by and gravitating around the architect Toyo Ito and the architectural firm SANAA. Beginning with an overview of Ito’s career and his influence as a mentor to a new generation of Japanese architects, the catalogue presents an illustrated portfolio of recent works by three generations of internationally acclaimed designers, including Sou Fujimoto, Akihisa Hirata and Junya Ishigami. "A Japanese Constellation" reveals a network of influence and cross-pollination that has become particularly relevant at the start of the 21st century. Essays by curators, architectural historians and critics reflect on the transmission of an architectural sensibility, and suggest an alternative model to what has been commonly described as an individuality-based "star-system" in architecture. Offering a panorama of interlinked, settled or up-and-coming stars, the publication reveals how shared architectural themes travel across generations of architects, creating a strong identity for a regional practice with global impact.
