Summary:
This book celebrates streamlining as epitomized by the work of Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Henri Dreyfuss, Russel Wright, and Norman Bel Geddes, and introduces other industrial designers, also highlighting the resurgence of streamlining among international vanguard designers from the 1980s to the present. Patent drawings and period photographs demonstrate the usage of these dynamically styled objects. Two hundred objects drawn from the Eric Brill Collection (recently donated to the American Friends of Canada) and supplemented by the Stewart Collection of 20th Century Design were photographed for this book. A full bibliography, biographies of the designers, and index complete the study.

The Design Museum Gent is internationally renowned for its collection of furniture and objects from the 1600s up until today. Its works span in taste and philosophy from an ornate eighteenth-century wooden chandelier by the Ghent sculptor J.F. Allaert to an assortment of radical industrial and decorative objects by the contemporary Italian designer Ettore Sottsass. The museum's special pride is its Art Nouveau collection, which features work by prominent Belgians like Henry van de Velde, Victor Horta and Paul Hanker alongside foreign designers like Josef Hoffman and Otto Wagner of the Wiener Secession. Works by Modernists like Le Corbusier and Gaston Eysselinck are seen in context with Postmodern pieces by Allessandro Mendini, Aldo Rossi, Hans Hollein and Andrea Branzi. And Minimalist works by Maarten Van Severen are juxtaposed with more sculptural pieces by Pieter De Bruyne and Emiel Veranneman and works by outsiders like Borek Sipek and Ron Arad.

Summary:
This broad selection of Swiss architecture, graphic design, and design from 1950 to 2006 demonstrates that in this context, playful humor and clarity are by no means opposites, but a highly unusual duo of qualities that mingle and interpenetrate. The question addressed by this publication is : are these examples from three professions, various regions and languages, and a period of more than fifty years bound together by a common denominator? No parade of luxury items, but talents and ideas finding material expression and clients with the courage to embrace new "inventions", presented with examples from architecture, graphic design, and design : movie theaters, swimming pools, pedestrian bridges, gas stations, posters, journals, record and CD covers, books, web design, furniture, and the legendary TEE train (Trans-Europe Express). This publication is accompanied by an exhibition at the Kornhausforum in Bern, which then goes on to additional locations throughout the world.

Summary:
Published on the occasion of an exhibition curated by Lynne Cooke, ''Woven histories'' offers a fresh and authoritative look at textiles—particularly weaving—as a major force in the evolution of abstraction. This richly illustrated volume features more than fifty creators whose work crosses divisions and hierarchies formerly segregating the fine arts from the applied arts and handicrafts. ''Woven histories'' begins in the early twentieth century, rooting the abstract art of Sophie Taeuber-Arp in the applied arts and handicrafts, then features the interdisciplinary practices of Anni Albers, Sonia Delaunay, Liubov Popova, Varvara Stepanova, and others who sought to effect social change through fabrics for furnishings and apparel. Over the century, the intersection of textiles and abstraction engaged artists from Ed Rossbach, Kay Sekimachi, Ruth Asawa, Lenore Tawney, and Sheila Hicks to Rosemarie Trockel, Ellen Lesperance, Jeffrey Gibson, Igshaan Adams, and Liz Collins, whose textile-based works continue to shape this discourse.

Summary:
This volume gathers an exceptional selection of decorative folding screens, exploring the history and semantics of the form by tracing trajectories of cross-pollination between East and West. At their core, folding screens embody liminality and the idea of sitting at the threshold of two conditions, both literally and metaphorically. They cross barriers between different spaces, disciplines, cultures and worlds. Taking that notion as a starting place, this volume follows processes of hybridization between different art forms and functions, collaborative relationships between designers and artists, and the emergence of newly created works. This gorgeous catalog features more than 70 examples of folding screens, including valuable historical objects and more recent works from international museums and private collections, plus a selection of new creations commissioned from more than 15 international artists specifically for this project.
