Summary:
This book offers a comprehensive account of the architecture of Florence, setting the city’s buildings within the political, economic, and cultural contexts in which they were made. The rapid expansion of its banking interests and its wool and textile industries brought Florence prosperity, and it became, under Medici power, the heart of the European Renaissance, and the sponsor of pivotal architectural works. Stretching from the city’s foundation by Julius Caesar in 59 BC to modern times, the text takes a thematic approach. It begins with a historical overview, then moves on to look at buildings associated with the powers of Church and State, followed by the practicalities of building and the main architectural types, ending with modern developments. Buildings covered range from the Duomo, with Brunelleschi’s cupola, and the Palazzo Pitti, to neighbourhood churches and piazzas. Landmark modernist buildings include those by architect Pier Luigi Nervi. The visual wealth of the city is reflected in specially commissioned photography, while original plans and paintings by Florentine masters emphasize the historical context. In addition to a glossary of Italian terms and biographical notes on major figures, the book includes a foldout map with a key to the buildings discussed.

Gillian Mackie examines the decorative schemes of the surviving chapels built in Italy and Istria from AD312-740 in the context of numerous chapels known from archaeological sites or from later medieval texts. Using the decoration as the primary source of evidence on the buildings' use and meaning, this survey includes chapels, imperial mausolea, and the oratories of the popes and bishops, from Rome, Milan, Ravenna, and the smaller centres of the upper Adriatic. The author begins with an overview of the various types, and then discusses several of the most complete monuments in considerable detail.

Summary:

Focusing on images and descriptions of movement and spectacle-everyday street activities, congregations in market piazzas, life in the Jewish ghetto and the plague hospital, papal and other ceremonial processions, public punishment, and pilgrimage routes-Rose Marie San Juan uncovers the social tensions and conflicts within seventeenth century Roman society that are both concealed within and prompted by mass-produced representations of the city. These depictions of Rome-guidebooks, street posters, broadsheets and brochures, topographic and thematic maps, city views, and collectible images of landmarks and other famous sights-redefined the ways in which public space was experienced, controlled, and utilized, encouraging tourists, pilgrims, and penitents while constraining the activities and movements of women, merchants, dissidents, and Jews.

Summary:
Barletta’s study examines both forms of evidence in an effort to reconcile the two sources, as well as to offer a coherent reconstruction of the origins and development of the Greek architectural orders. Beginning with the early, pre-canonical material, she demonstrates that the relatively late emergence of the Doric and Ionic orders arose from contributions of separate regions of the Greek world, rather than from a single center. Barletta’s reinterpretation of the evidence also assigns greater importance to the often overlooked contributions of Western Greece and the Cycladic Islands.

Summary:
The decades from 1500 to 1550 in Florence encompassed one of the most original and outstanding periods in the entire history of art. This gloriously illustrated book gathers and describes many of the beloved paintings, drawings, and sculptures created by the greatest masters of the period along with less familiar but equally beautiful and intriguing works. The contributors to the volume explore the masterpieces of Florence and challenge conventional interpretations of the evolution of this art. The book outlines the historical context of the Florentine High Renaissance and then discusses drawings, paintings, and sculpture in turn. Focusing on major artists and their contemporaries and allies, the authors demonstrate the great importance of drawing during this period and show that there was a consistency in the brand of creativity found in such artists as Michelangelo, Fiorentino, Cellini, and Bronzino. The authors question the relevance of terms like High Renaissance and Mannerism, and they contend that, contrary to commonly held assumptions, there was no strong stylistic division between art produced in Florence before and after the death of Raphael in 1520.
