Summary:
The book illustrates nine locations of artistic and architectural interest, conceived by prominent Italian families and dynasties as urban villas or country houses centered around the pursuit of entertainment and leisure. These lavishly decorated and frescoed palaces are adorned with handcrafted furniture and works of art and surrounded by gardens that retain their original layout to this day--a very rare feature. An historical text introduces each property, giving an overview of its origins. The villas have been specially photographed for this book by Dario Fusaro, with views of both the palace interiors and their grounds, as well as the gardens, glimpses of the halls, details of the furnishings, and a focus on the frescoes, where still preserved. Explanatory text offers insights on the most interesting frescoes, such as those of Veronese at Villa Barbaro. For the first time, Fusaro also employs a drone with the purpose of capturing the architectural structure and elements of each Italian Renaissance garden, from above and as a whole.

Summary:

Summary:
Elegant and magnificent, conservatories reveal fascinating social, cultural, botanical, and engineering advances as they have evolved across history. First appearing in the eighteenth century as simple structures designed to protect fruit trees and other delicate plants from harsh European winters, conservatories became grand glass houses that spread across the European continent, to the Americas, and ultimately around the world. Through archival and contemporary photographs, drawings of landmark structures, and accessible text, ''The Conservatory'' celebrates the patrons and designers who advanced the technology and architectural majesty of these light-filled structures. The importance of conservatories continues to grow with efforts to conserve phenomenal plants and their environments.

Summary:
The Villa d'Este is a 16th-century villa in Tivoli, near Rome, internationally renowned for its terraced hillside Italian Renaissance garden containing an outstanding array of fountains, nymphaea, grottoes, water features and atmospheric sound effects. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, the garden is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance gardens in Europe. Villa d’Este was first conceived of in 1550 by the governor of Tivoli, Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, who had long envisioned a garden built on the slopes of the valley known as Valle Gaudente. But it was only after 1560 that the villa’s architectural and iconological blueprint was defined by painter-archaeologist-architect Pirro Ligorio and executed by court architect Alberto Galvani. When Ippolito d’Este died in 1572, the project was nearly complete.

This volume describes over 50 of the world's most powerful, harmful, legendary and storied plants – from the screaming mandrake to calming St John's Wort, to predicting the weather with seaweed, the creation of salves for broken hearts, sore heads, protection from evil spirits and to even induce immortality. Wise women, apothecaries, witches, herbalists: whatever you like to call them, those who cultivate plants for their apparent mystical properties have existed for thousands of years. The Witch's Garden tells the story of our folkloric fascination with these magical specimens, documenting the beliefs and rituals surrounding the natural world. Illustrated with pages from herbals held within the archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, along with botanical illustrations and archival images depicting magic and mayhem, The Witch's Garden beautifully evokes the bewitching nature of mysterious plants.

Summary:

Summary:
A growing, living house, a building made of a plant seems to be a contradiction in terms. Nevertheless, the Khasi in eastern India already knew how to connect the roots of rubber trees to form footbridges, and in southern Germany dance linden trees formed the centre of villages for centuries. Following on from this, the new discipline of Baubotanik is dedicated to designing with trees. Build projects, prototypes and visionary concepts point the way to a new green architecture. This introduction shows the possibilities of such living constructions and explains the botanical growth principles that guide the design. The basics of constructing with trees are presented. The book encourages a whole new look at architecture that becomes part of urban nature.

Summary:
At the onset of World War II, the visionary Dada artist Hannah Höch (1889–1978) retreated to a secluded house on the outskirts of Berlin, fleeing persecution for her radical collage work and her unflagging opposition to fascism. In the decades that followed, the surrounding garden became her artistic muse, but it was also a means of survival: its fruits and vegetables were a vital source of sustenance during wartime, and its grounds served as the hiding place for her priceless collection of Dada artworks. Eighty years later, this richly illustrated and deeply researched book reimagines Höch’s garden from an artist’s perspective. It brings together Höch’s botanical collages and garden photographs with deep archival cuts exploring her queer history with Til Brugman; new art by the artists Scott Roben and Johanna Tiedtke, based on visits to Höch’s garden; and an essay by the writer Alhena Katsof. Together, these elements interweave past and present, private and public, personal and political, offering new views into Höch’s lush refuge.
