Summary:
Already number TEN, ''Pressing Matters X'' is a special issue reflecting a year of reflection and change, after several waves of the pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests and newly developed hybrid teaching methods. It follows last year’s ''Pressing Matters 9'' that was completely rethought with the aim to present an Open Source publication that shares the Department of Architecture’s concept of design-research, an integral approach of critical thinking, rigorous research, and design, representing a deep understanding of the complex layers of architecture. Together with Jonathan Jackson & team of WSDIA, a more integral design was developed, allowing input from research [ARI labs], students, faculty and Penn’s special events. This anniversary of ''Pressing Matters'' is celebrated by adding the ''decade'' color of silver to the usual recycled cardboard cover of Weitzman’s architecture publication. It also represents a year of new opportunities brought by a complete rethinking of education through the introduction of remote learning, zoom lectures and meetings. A much larger international group of diverse jurors, experts, and critics could be invited as travel was of no hindrance for attendance.

Errant #3 takes the ambiguous feeling of discomfort as a productive space to think from. What if instead of avoiding discomfort, we lean into it, dwell on it, stay with it so as to be able to learn from it? Central to the issue is the presence of discomfort as it accompanies the work of decoloniality, both in positions of marginalisation and of those who perhaps feel(...)

Summary:
Errant #3 takes the ambiguous feeling of discomfort as a productive space to think from. What if instead of avoiding discomfort, we lean into it, dwell on it, stay with it so as to be able to learn from it? Central to the issue is the presence of discomfort as it accompanies the work of decoloniality, both in positions of marginalisation and of those who perhaps feel their comfort shaken for the first time. The contributions explore discomfort through personal histories, as well as curatorial, architectural & psychoanalytic perspectives.

Summary:
BRUTHER is the Paris-based architectural studio launched by Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot in 2007. Describing architecture as a ''combat sport'', the duo rose to international prominence in 2014. Competitions, experiments, and investigations, are all part of a work process they see as a strategic game, a balancing act between abstraction and function, diversity and uniformity, opacity and transparency. This edition presents the full extent of their work through 29 projects, ranging from collective housing and cultural and educational institutions to pavilions and exhibitions. While many are small in scale or unbuilt, they nevertheless allow an in-depth look at the practice.

The ensuing chapter covers the competitions to design the Joint Research Centre in Sevilla, with BIG’s winning project as well as the second and third prizes. Also included six examples of interventions on heritage in Spain, which avoid altering the relationship between the remains and their environment. The construction section features the sports park designed by MAD Architects in Quzhou, where the stadium, the first element to be completed, is gradually unveiled as a light floating structure from the different paths that lead to the venue.

Summary:
After the traumatic experience of the previous year, 2021 was the year of overcoming the pandemic and of preparing for a long-awaited return to normalcy. The AV Monographs Yearbook goes over the most important events of the period, gathering twenty-four buildings that represent the best architecture constructed in Spain. Aside from a few large-scale works, like the Córdoba Library by Paredes Pedrosa or the Celta FC Sports City by Irisarri Piñera, the selection clearly reflects how the climate crisis has become a top priority for architects, especially the younger ones, who choose sustainable materials like wood, used in the apartments by Peris Toral and by Bosch Capdeferro, in the fire station by Josep Ferrando, or in the small social pavilion by Behark.
