Summary:
Works That Work examines the often ignored areas of design through engaging storytelling. In this spirit, it also intends to bypass traditional distribution networks and marketing. Instead, it focuses on deepening relationships with its readers, making them partners in this enterprise. Seeking out examples of unexpected creativity from India to the Netherlands, it promotes the idea that creativity surrounds us in our daily lives, from refugee gardens in Tunisia to the vernacular culture of Chinese megacities. With contributions by Michael Wolf, Henk Wildschut, Linda Asher, Irma Boom, David Ives, Hanif Kureshi, Robin Stam, Alexandre Orion, and many more.

A self-described accumulation of design-related stories that would make good dinner discussions with friends, this second instalment of Works That Work follows a thread of interest that begins with Kester Freriks’ focus on the noise-reducing landscape surrounding Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, then sees Ed van Hinte recounting the remarkable story of the Boeing 747, which was designed around the specifications of the intermodal container, the complex global impact of which is described by Marc Levinson. Globalisation is further investigated by Suzanne Wales and Peter Bil’ak, through smuggling, trade and the portable lamp, and Hans Wilschut finds fake trees in Johannesburg.

Summary:
In its second instalment, Portal 9 blends creative writing, photography and essays with academic perspectives, perceptive journalism and cultural critiques to address the need for conscientious debate about architecture, planning and culture in urban contexts, both in the Middle East and globally. The city square, which has repeatedly witnessed Arab uprisings in recent times, is the focus here. Have the demonstrations affirmed its traditional function, or redefined it? Are we witnessing a resurgence of the square as public space, a physical reality for shared expression? A diverse range of contributors critically address these and other highly topical questions.

Summary:
"Bracket [at Extremes]" includes critical articles and unpublished design projects that investigate architecture, infrastructure and technology as they operate in conditions of imbalance, negotiate tipping points and test limit states. We are conditioned, as designers of the built environment, towards the organization of people, programs and movement. Indeed the history of modern urbanism, architecture and building science has been predicated on an anti-entropic notion of programmatic and social order. But are there scenarios in which a state of extremity or imbalance is productive? Bracket [at Extremes] seeks to understand what new spatial orders emerge in this liminal space. How might it be leveraged as an opportunity for invention? What are the limits of wilderness and control, of the natural and artificial, the real and the virtual? What new landscapes, networks, and urban models might emerge in the wake of destabilized economic, social and environmental conditions?
