Summary:
Schmidt uses atmosphere-laden details with high-contrast black-and-white images of cityscapes, details in nature, and portraits in 'Waffenruhe' to create a subjective, leaden picture of a still-divided city. He no longer deploys the techniques of pure documentation, but brings together surprising combinations of images to express a generation's dystopian sense of life shortly before the fall of the Wall. The first edition, published in 1987 by the Berlin-based Dirk Nishen Verlag quickly sold out and continues to fetch high prices on the antiquarian book market. Thirty years later, 'Waffenruhe' is now being reprinted. This artist's book - often included on lists of the most influential photographic books of all time - is once again being made available.

Summary:
Since 1993, Peter Steinhauer has documented the many facets of Asian culture, with a keen eye for architecture, urban landscape, and man-made structures and environments. On his first visit to Hong Kong in 1994, arriving at the old Kai Tak International Airport, Steinhauer noticed a very large structure encaged in bamboo and swathed in yellow material standing out beneath a canopy of clouds, glowing against the monochromatic, urban skyline. Hong Kong is the final stronghold of the bamboo scaffolders who once practiced their trade at construction sites throughout Asia. Reproduced in this book are 100 images that reflect Steinhauer's fascination with these hauntingly beautiful and monumental edifices, their bamboo scaffolding draped in brightly hued material.

Summary:
An extraordinary collection of eighty pictures from the Alinari Archives located in Florence, Italy makes up a never-before-published sequence of images including portraits, landscapes, and rituals providing a rare entry into traditional 19th-century Japan. Felice Beato was one of the first Western photographers to enter Japan when the country first opened its borders (1853); he revealed to the Western world a country preserved in time and never seen before. In 1863 he moved to Yokohama and opened a photography school, the School of Yokohama. The photos of the book preserve the original photographic prints, manually colored black-and-white prints, that truly embody the spirit of that period. Images feature fascinating portraits of women in kimonos, geishas, samurai warriors, and interiors of Japanese homes and gardens as well as scenes of everyday life including tea ceremonies or the theater. Each photo is accompanied by text providing historical, anthropological, and artistic context.

Summary:
Photographic monograph by Cristian Ordóñez. The pictures of this book were taken between years 2009 and 2017. Eight years in which the artist investigates the connection to place in a close relationship and immersion to the land. People, places and traces discovered in various locations of Chile (where the artist is originally from), Canada (his new home) and the United States. Cristian explores his surroundings and boundaries to find details that provide memories to a place that still feels new to him. He often put myself in situations where he wanders alone through unknown places, without any specific plan in mind - exploring, improvising and letting himself drift and flow to record elements that drive his attention, discovering cultures and local information that manifests along the way as evidence, providing a representation of the area and somehow activating memories of other places he has lived in.

Summary:
This photo series is Kenji Toma's homage to the botanical illustrations in « Choix Des Plus Belles Fleurs » by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, one of the most well-regarded flower encyclopedias of the nineteenth century. Back when color photography did not exist, these images were illustrated with the purpose of replicating the botanic subject as realistically as possible. Toma is interested in doing the exact opposite with the photographic medium which, realistic by nature, can also be used to make a subject look unreal and artificial. The result is a contemporary revival of the concept of the botanical encyclopedia.

Summary:
This book features images by American photographer William Wylie (b. 1957) taken over the course of five years. The photographs reanimate the ancient city of Pompeii, showing the ongoing cycles of deterioration and preservation that mark it as a living landscape. Wylie captures Pompeii’s former grandeur, including its terracotta reliefs and wall paintings, while also drawing attention to the signs of an active excavation site, from plaster casts in glass cases to ceramic fragments in storage facilities. His elegant compositions and command of light and shadow highlight how natural phenomena, pollution, and human intervention are continually reshaping the city. People, however, are notably absent in the photographs. Wylie beautifully documents Pompeii’s present by engaging with the tenuous relationship that the archaeological site maintains with the past.
