Summary:
This highly visual investigation shows the complex nature and enormous impact of recent developments in our information society: a transformation produced by the irresistible combined expansion of digital technology and telecommunication networks. The urban space is a privileged laboratory for observing and experiencing the density of signs and their multiple frameworks: Signage, Giant Screens, Signboards, Flags, Poster Displays, Architecture and Advertisement, Surveillance Technologies, Tracking Devices, etc. Eric Sadin started this project during a residence in Kyoto, Japan, then enlarged the focus of the inquiry to further Asian, European, and American cities as Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Bombay, Paris, London, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, New York. The result is a fascinating visual journey in 2000 colour illustrations with explanatory captions, structured into some 100 topics and analysed in brilliant theoretical texts providing the necessary background.

Summary:
The purpose and primary function of wayfinding and signage design is to provide spatial orientation as quickly and clearly as possible. Respective concepts and systems can be designed for individual buildings, for example coporate headquarters, museums or hospitals, for areas such as a university campus or distinct municipal district, or for entire systems like a city's public transport. In addition to communicating direction, the interplay of typography, pictograms, materials, colors and shapes in these systems also delineates a particular identity of the location. On the basis of international realizations this title shows the range of different approaches and implementation possibilities of environmental graphics.

Summary:

Summary:
At the beginning of the 20th century, an unprecedented volume of information began circulating in the mass media, calling for the development of new visualization tactics to organize it all. The abundance of news and information required new forms of representation that would allow readers to glean a quick understanding of complex circumstances at a glance; the infographic was born. "Image Factories" is dedicated to the pioneering infographics of Austrian physician and illustrator Fritz Kahn (1888–1968) and German philosopher Otto Neurath (1882–1945), who both worked with graphic designers to realize their groundbreaking information visualizations. Presenting historical material and imagery designed between 1920 and 1945 alongside contemporary infographics, with a series of essays by Helena Doudova, Stephanie Jacobs, Patrick Rössler, Bernd Stiegler, Vilém Flusser and Otto Neurath, Image Factories offers a fascinating account of the early development of the infographic.
