Can "exit" and "disobedience", as envisioned by Virno, be considered as options from an artistic point of view? And what would an insistence on "status" or long-term projects as invoked by Boltanski/Chiapello look like if artists were to take on this strategy? How much can one count on pictures alone, as Mitchell seems to do? And, can pictures really change the "ways of worldmaking"?

Published with an exhibition at Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm, this volume documents artworks which demonstrate how the distinction between form and content is difficult to maintain. Moreover, these works show that content also comes out of the material, and is not just communicated through it. Creation, processes, and becoming are all emphasised in an homage to craftsmanship and exploration of material changeability. There are also social and political dimensions, wherein several of the artists focus on the transference of knowledge, generosity, and alternative forms of organisation. With work by Sheila Hicks, Abdoulaye Konaté, Lee Mingwei, Petrit Halilaj, and more.

Summary:

Summary:
Bringing the creative process of three contemporary artists into conversation, ''Architectures of the Unforeseen'' stages an encounter between philosophy and art and design. Its prose invites the reader to think along with Brian Massumi as he thoroughly embodies the work of these artists, walking the line that separates theory from art and providing equally nurturing sustenance for practicing artists and working philosophers. Based on Massumi’s lengthy relationships with digital architect Greg Lynn, interactive media artist Rafael-Lozano Hemmer, and mixed-media installation creator Simryn Gill, ''Architectures of the Unforeseen' delves into their processes of creating art. The book’s primary interest is in what motivates each artist’s practice and in how their pieces work to give off their unique effects.

Summary:
Through eight thematic case studies that illuminate what eco art means in practice, reception, and history, Cheetham places the form in a longer and broader art-historical context. He considers a wide range of media—from painting, sculpture, and photography to artists’ films, video, sound work, animation, and installation—and analyzes the work of internationally prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Nancy Holt, Mark Dion, and Robert Smithson. In doing so, Cheetham reveals eco art to be a dynamic extension of a long tradition of landscape depiction in the West that boldly enters into today’s debates on climate science, government policy, and our collective and individual responsibility to the planet.

Summary:
In the words of Hannah Arendt, “Half of politics is image-making, the other half is the art of making people believe the image.” From South Africa to Charlottesville, heated discussions over statues, their removal and their vandalism frequently make the news. “Decoding Dictatorial Statues”, a project by Korean graphic design researcher Ted Hyunhak Yoon, is a collection of images and texts exploring the visual rhetoric of statues in public space. How can we decode statues and their languages, their objecthood and materiality, their role as media icons and their voice in political debates? The book responds to urgent concerns about the representation of our heritage by not only asking us to examine what history gets put on a pedestal, but also to consider the visual rhetoric of the statue itself.

Summary:
Founded in North Carolina in 1933, Black Mountain College ranks alongside the Bauhaus as one of the most innovative schools of the 20th century. Inspired by the forward-thinking pedagogical ideas of philosopher John Dewey, the experimental, interdisciplinary college combined the ideas of radical European modernism with the philosophy of American pragmatism and teaching methods designed to encourage personal initiative as well as the social competence of the individual. Visual arts, economics, physics, dance, architecture and music were all taught on an equal footing, and teachers and students lived together in a democratically organized community. The second director of the school was Josef Albers, and John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, Walter Gropius, Franz Kline and Charles Olson were among its teachers. As a result, the college played a foundational role in the development of a range of avant-garde practices, and exerted an enormous influence on the development of the arts in the second half of the 20th century.

The City of Light. For many, these four words instantly conjure late nineteenth-century Paris and the garish colors of Toulouse-Lautrec’s iconic posters. More recently, the Eiffel Tower’s nightly show of sparkling electric lights has come to exemplify our fantasies of Parisian nightlife. Though we reflect longingly on such scenes, in "Illuminated Paris", Hollis Clayson shows that there’s more to these clichés than meets the eye. In this illustrated book, she traces the dramatic evolution of lighting in Paris and how artists responded to the shifting visual and cultural scenes that resulted from these technologies.
