J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) seldom left home without a sketchbook. Over the course of his lifetime, he filled more than three hundred, most of them small enough to carry in his pocket. This facsimile represents Turner’s last known intact sketchbook, now in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art. Turner used it on the coast of the English Channel in Kent, in and around Margate, from June to September 1845. The volume is accompanied by a poem in which Tracey Emin (b. 1963) expresses her personal connection with Turner’s work. Emin grew up in Margate, the seaside town that Turner returned to time and again to draw.

Summary:
Moore, Lyndon, Turnbull & Whitaker was established in Berkeley, California, in 1962. Soon after, the architects began working on The Sea Ranch, a large development on the northern California coast that runs from the ocean’s edge, with its protected beaches and cliffs, to a coastal meadow stretching the entire length of the acreage. The firm was charged with developing a master plan for The Sea Ranch that would be aesthetically refined and have minimal impact on the surrounding natural landscape. Local materials such as redwood timber were used in the construction of the residential units and recreational buildings, which together express the era’s particularly Californian modernism.

Summary:
Shot in Dungeness, on the coast of England, this series by Berlin-based photographer Shinichiro Shiraishi is influenced by memories of his childhood visits to his grandparents’ home in the Japanese countryside. It also reflects a realisation that emerged from his time there: that natural and human-made are both part of the landscape and a part of nature. The duality of Dungeness is replicated by the book’s design – images shimmer, black pages balance white, adder stones puncture paper. To visualise the coexistence between natural and artificial objects, 90 photos have been subjected to analogue and digital processes, bringing us closer to the emotions of this peripheral place.

Summary:
Dutch landscape photographer Jan Koster first became known for his innovative river landscapes, for which he turned the camera 120 degrees around one point and created stunning panoramic scenes. For the new work featured in ''Dutchscapes,'' Koster abandoned the panoramic format, systematically covering the Dutch coastline in single mammoth images, documenting the dunes, sea, and dikes. The end result of this lengthy foray along the Dutch coast is an overwhelmingly serene and visually spacious series of photographs. As quoted by art historian, Merel Bem, Koster's monumental photographs should be viewed not only in photographic terms but also as an extension of the Dutch landscape painting tradition.

Summary:
Idyll comprises a series of paintings, silk-screened prints, and drawings. Much of Albrecht’s work is inspired by the dreaminess of childhood, whether expressing her cloudy recollections of the storybooks she read as a child (stories populated by strange creatures, impossible happenings, and oneiric landscapes) or the forested West Coast landscapes that surrounded her. On the pages of Idyll, a series of interconnected myths emerges fully formed, each myth articulating a sense of wistfulness for a past that never was. By turns surreal, fantastical, and absurdist, Albrecht constructs these pieces with the vivid yet subtle values that are a product of her silk-screening work.

Summary:
Famous for massive public art projects, including "Wrapped Coast, One Million Square Feet" in Australia and "Running Fence" in Northern California, Christo Javacheff and his wife Jeanne-Claude were used to dealing with intransigent bureaucracies. But they hadn't reckoned with New York City. The couple's 1979 project--temporarily placing thousands of saffron-colored banners across the walkways of 843-acre Central Park--did not receive the city's blessing until 2003. Published in advance of the 16-day installation in February 2005, Christo and Jeanne-Claude: The Gates is a picture book that moves briskly from photographs of early presentations and hearings to numerous shots of workers assembling the steel, aluminum, vinyl and rip-stop nylon components of the piece.

Summary:
"Romantic modernist: the life and Wwrk of Norman Jaffe, architect" is the first book to explore Norman Jaffe's body of work and the inner struggle that shaped his life. After mysteriously disappearing early one day in the late summer of 1993 while on a morning swim, the famously prolific architect left behind many unanswered questions - not only about the cause of his death but also about the nature of his architectural legacy. Through interviews with Jaffe's closest friends and associates, as well as exhaustive archival research, critic Alastair Gordon traces Jaffe's career trajectory from his early years on the West Coast through his increasingly celebrated life in New York and his premature, unexplained death.

Summary:
Francois Halard's unique photographic sensibility is unmistakable. Each image is imbued with the intimate knowledge of design history, each story a lesson in a master's point of view. This book is a continuation of his last volume of photography of grand interiors, artists' studios, and architectural pilgrimage sites. Each story's subject matter is not just a personal passion of the photographer, but also a chapter in design history: Philip Johnson and Charles James's de Menil House, Giorgio Morandi's studio, Rick Owens's radical Paris apartment, Eileen Gray's recently restored modernist home on the French coast, Dries Van Noten's verdant garden and home, the home and studio of Louise Bourgeois in New York, and many more.
