Summary:
This publication is the first book to examine Christopher Alexander’s theory of “systems generating systems” and its application to a building design. It brings together essays from an interdisciplinary, international cast of experts, including Eva Guttmann, Gabriele Kaiser, Ernst Beneder, Walter Ruprechter, Hisae Hosoi, Christian Kühn, Ida Pristinger, and Norihito Nakatani, as well as conversations with Hajo Neis and Takaharu Tezuka to investigate the application of this theory to the school and university complex, the largest project Alexander has realized based on pattern language. Among the issues discussed are topicality, interdisciplinary and internationality, and culture transfer. The essays also look at the design-build movement as an antithesis to today’s standardized and commerce-driven architectural production.

Summary:
In 2019 it will be the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus. Prompted by this occasion, with "project bauhaus" ARCH+ has undertaken a critical appraisal of the Bauhaus ideas: working for several years, an international group of experts from a wide range of disciplines has investigated the socio-political relevance and emancipatory potential of the Bauhaus - historically, for today, and for the future. How can design still become effective as a political project? What are the possibilities and problems encountered by universal design in the age of globalization? Can the emancipatory potential of technology still be activated in a digitalized world? The answers to these questions are published here for the first time for an international readership.

Summary:
Frederick Law Olmsted (1822–1903) is considered the father of landscape architecture in the United States for his creation of several renowned urban parks and park systems around the country. Whether in Central Park in New York, the Emerald Necklace in Boston, or the park systems of Chicago, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Rochester, and Louisville—trees are essential elements of all of Olmsted’s park designs. Through Stanley Greenberg’s stunning series of black and white photographs of the trees that date to the beginnings of these parks, this volume offers an intimate encounter with Olmsted, his motifs, and his heritage. Three essays by renowned experts on history, sociology, and landscape architecture complement the narrative and present an interdisciplinary vision of Olmsted’s achievement.

Summary:
Food for the City offers 13 visions from experts across the world: a politician, an activist, an economist, a philosopher, a chef, an architect and a farmer, among others. From the visionary to the practical, their essays and proposals examine the influence food can have on the culture, shape and functioning of the city, addressing issues of urban farming and laboratory engineering, and weighing the choices to be made between altering our food production systems or our consumption patterns. The book comes with a timeline from 2050 BCE to 2050 CE and a rich pictorial essay that demonstrates how feeding a city has been a preoccupation as old as the city itself.
