Summary:
Berlin, Brussels, Florence, London, Paris, Toronto, Zurich – fascinating western metropolises which are all sophisticated icons of international commerce, finance, tourism, though in very different ways. Striking appearances and successful structures are, however, only one side of the reality. On the darker side, there are the insidious changes which have come about primarily for reasons of quick profit and consumerism; social and ethnic ghettos are on the rise. Yet in all these cities there are forces which are facing up to these supposedly irreversible developments and which must be taken seriously. INURA – the International Network for Urban Research and Action – has published "Contested Metropolis" which looks at these seven cities by presenting important critical writings and alternative urban projects.

Summary:
Belgian architect Xaveer De Geyter is the focus of this issue, which features a selection of projects from the past fifteen years. He began his career working with Rem Koolhaas at OMA, and started his own firm in the early 1990s. De Geyter believes architecture is about opening up possibilities: the potential of a site, the hidden opportunity of a particular situation, of a programmatic conflict. Among the featured projects are Hasselt’s Z33 Museum, Sint-Lucas School of Fine Arts in Ghent, a learning and innovation centre in Brussels, and a design for the International Olympic Committee Headquarters. Includes an interview with the architect by Sarah Whiting and essay by Philip Ursprung.

Summary:
A.J. Lode Janssens is one of Belgium’s most idiosyncratic architects and a radical educator. He was cofounder of the experimental studio Atelier Alpha and the Sint-Lucas Werkgemeenschap, a workshop linking architectural education, practice and research, and operated in close collaboration with ILAUD, the International Laboratory of Architecture and Urban Design. This publication presents The Balloon, an all-but-unknown temporary pneumatic home experiment, built in 1973 in Humbeek, where he lived with his family until 1986. Lode Janssens considered it an uncompromising ephemeral attempt at de-architecturalization and living in harmony with nature: a cave-dwelling, a work-in-progress, an empirical residence. This publication accompanies the eponymous exhibition at CIVA in Brussels.

Summary:
To reduce the building sector’s impact on the climate and the environment, the Brussels-based designers’ collective Rotor has worked these past twenty years on developing ideas about salvaging building materials and retaining preservation of existing buildings. Rotor’s impact is undeniably wide-ranging. Besides generating ecological awareness in the construction sector, they have also pushed boundaries on an operational and logistical level and are helping to build skills by sharing their know-how. Thanks to them, we have also seen a change in mentality in terms of aesthetics. This special issue of A+, with Rotor as guest editors, is a collection of essays that looks critically at material flows and at the challenges of a circular economy for architects today.
