Summary:
What is required to renew and articulate public spaces? The need for, and demands of, public spaces are highly specific to the local spatial and social conditions under which people live. Action at neighborhood level is crucial, and must involve interacting and co-creating with residents to discover their needs. At the start of the pandemic, superwien was commissioned to develop innovative designs for urban public spaces in three different cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Maputo (Mozambique), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The main objective of this applied research was to strengthen the capacity of local governments to undertake participatory urban design processes. This book calls upon architects and urbanists to develop place-based solutions in challenging circumstances.

Summary:
This book examines the notion of the home in the context of the pandemic and lockdown, as they relate to environmental concerns and how we live with viruses and bacteria. It argues that, in order to decrease our vulnerability to infective agents, we need to acknowledge the link between people, space, daily routines and microbes and explore how the predominantly benign microbial world might be harnessed to combat and boost our immunity to future pathogens. Suggesting more than environmental home improvements, it explores new innovations and new materials which incorporate microbes for more ecological designs, such as ceramic tiles, concrete bio-receptive surfaces, building skins, fabrics, waste management and alternative energy supplies.

Summary:
Over the past one hundred years, the office has been integral to the development of modern society. It has shaped the architecture of our cities, the behavior of our organizations, and the everyday movements of millions of people. In 2020, however, the global pandemic brought our attendance in the office to an abrupt halt and triggered a complete reevaluation of the purpose of the workplace. This book offers a panoramic view of the office and explores what happens next. The authors advance a manifesto for “unworking”—unlearning old habits and rituals established for an outdated office and crafting and creating new ones fit for an age of digital technology, design innovation, and diverse workforces.

This past year numerous dramas have competed for our attention: sub-prime mortgages, banking meltdown, bailout, stimulus, pandemic, bankruptcy. The all-consuming effort to follow these events seldom leaves a moment to contemplate the explanations themselves. What is the stated dilemma, context or motive for any one of these problems? The all-consuming effort to follow these events seldom leaves a moment to contemplate the explanations themselves. What is the stated dilemma, context or motive for any one of these problems? And most importantly, how does a problem's formulation determine its proposed solution? Volume 20 is dedicated to the art of storytelling. It presents the storylines of current events and architecture to show that while the truth is important, so is the ability of fiction to elevate fact. perhaps the best way to understand our era is through narratives that distort, pervert and animate reality?

Summary:
MASS MoCA presents a suite of new works made over the past 2½ years by artist Carrie Schneider. Reminiscent of abstract paintings, her photographs play with the camera’s imaginative potential and its relationship to the subconscious, while experimenting with the medium’s sculptural possibilities. Isolated during the pandemic, Schneider, like many of us, relied on her phone to find community and inspiration. Working with a room-sized camera she built herself – a sort of camera obscura affixed with a large-format Rodenstock lens – she exposes screen grabs of friends’ social media feeds, images from her private archive, and shots of historical artworks directly to photo paper. The enigmatic results provide glimpses into the artist’s interior life and present a picture of a deep desire for connection.

Summary:
''Credos'' is a series of exhibitions that started off as table-top group mini-exhibitions conceived for church-basement bazaars in Laval and Greater Montreal throughout 2019–20. The first two editions took place in different Armenian congregations in Laval. When the COVID-19 pandemic put subsequent Québec editions on hold, a version was transported to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and shown in the frame of the all-day public art festival ''Art in the Open'' in 2020. An 8-hour online radio program was broadcast alongside the tabletop displays. ''Credos IV'' is also a response to social distance, but at the same time a furthering of an inquiry into the substitutions and translations of an exhibition into non-gallery spaces.

Summary:
The global pandemic forced many people to set up an office at home. For this edition of ‘Useful Photography’, Marlies Swinkels researched the websites of real estate agents across Europe and collected images of the corner of the room usually reserved for remote working. It is a space where the view is often not as important as the background, which is of course what the outside world sees during the endless Zoom and Teams sessions. From sharing a room with exercise equipment or the washer and dryer to a small table next to the bed, a desk in a closet or attic storage space, or even setting up in the kid’s bedroom, the future workplace is not quite what we imagined it to be.

Summary:
With this book, author Henry Petroski delves into the ongoing physical interaction between people and things that enables them to stay put or causes them to move. He explores the range of daily human experience whereby we feel the sensations of push and pull, resistance and assistance. The book is also about metaphorical force, which manifests itself as pressure and relief, achievement and defeat. Petroski draws from a variety of disciplines to make the case that force—represented especially by our sense of touch—is a unifying principle that pervades our lives. In the wake of a prolonged global pandemic that increasingly cautioned us about contact with the physical world, Petroski offers a new perspective on the importance of the sensation and power of touch.

Summary:
In this publication, Caterina Albano examines the cultural significance of breath and air to a wide array of forces in our midst, including economy, politics, infection, and ecological violence. Through a consideration of recent art practices and projects, including the dance project Breath Catalogue, which makes visible the breathing patterns of dancers, and Forensic Architecture’s Cloud Studies video, which investigates eight different kinds of clouds from airstrikes to herbicides to tear gas, Albano focuses on breath as both an intuitive process and a conveyer of meanings. Conceived in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and systemic inequalities that it has laid bare, the book shows the potential of artistic practices to mobilize affect as a form of cultural and political critique.

Summary:
After the traumatic experience of the previous year, 2021 was the year of overcoming the pandemic and of preparing for a long-awaited return to normalcy. The AV Monographs Yearbook goes over the most important events of the period, gathering twenty-four buildings that represent the best architecture constructed in Spain. Aside from a few large-scale works, like the Córdoba Library by Paredes Pedrosa or the Celta FC Sports City by Irisarri Piñera, the selection clearly reflects how the climate crisis has become a top priority for architects, especially the younger ones, who choose sustainable materials like wood, used in the apartments by Peris Toral and by Bosch Capdeferro, in the fire station by Josep Ferrando, or in the small social pavilion by Behark.
