Summary:
In his Co-op Interieur (1926)—a simple corner of a room known only in a photograph— Swiss architect Hannes Meyer (1889–1954) gave expression to a radical, antibourgeois style of interior. Comprised only of a bed, a lamp, two chairs and a gramophone on a table, he imagined this room for the nomadic urban worker. Through the absence of people, objects and spatial features(...)

Through the absence of people, objects and spatial features as much as by the distinctiveness of its design, Meyer was proclaiming an alternative principle for housing, proposing that architecture and design were intended not to fulfill historically determined needs but to overcome their constraints. Historical photographs of the interior and three provocative essays on ownership, minimalism and the “unhomely,” by Brussels-based architecy Pier Vittrio, Mexican architect Raquel Franklin, and Gree architect Aristide Antonas, respectively, explore the layers of meaning within Meyer’s mise-en-scène manifesto on collectivity and utility as a counterpoint to ownership and private property.

Summary:
Embedded in politically and economically charged sites in the Pearl River Delta, Mongolia, and the European Union, 51N4E (Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn) and Rural Urban Framework (Joshua Bolchover and John Lin) operate in expanded ecologies of architectural practice, questioning the role of the architect today. By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zu¨rich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

Summary:
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is one of the most influential architecture studios in the world, with a body of work that includes some of the most important buildings and urban designs of our time. "SOM: Works by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, 2009-2019" is the sixth and latest volume in the series to cover every era of SOM’s history, from the iconic Modernist works of the 1950s to the projects of today. Documenting SOM’s global body of work—which ranges from a prototype for a biophilic breathing wall to the new headquarters for NATO in Brussels—"SOM: Works by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, 2009-2019" demonstrates how SOM has come to hold its unparalleled position as a steward of international architecture. This new volume details SOM’s approach to designing impactful, complex projects in a globalized world—an approach which marries a deep bench of global expertise with a commitment to honoring culture and people in the communities where SOM works.

Summary:
The story of this book was built over time, through the many exchanges that took place between a photographer, the editors, graphic designers and authors. The publication is structured around five photographic series, each devoted to a particular building, site or architect: Château de Chambord in France, Dilmun Burial Mounds in Bahrain, Joze Plecnik’s buildings in and around Ljubljana, Rio Tinto in Spain, and Victor Horta’s Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. It is, especially, a book of (hi)stories in which the series by Maxime Delvaux are accompanied by texts. For these, various authors have been invited to react to the images with the idea of experimenting with the text: fiction, historical essay, round-table discussion, scientific text and photonovel. Graphic designers played with text and images to give them form. The reader is in turn invited to create possible alliances between images and texts. Like Maxime Delvaux’s photographic approach, these texts and their articulation with the photographs are specific to each subject, illustrating five ways of showing and telling about places near and far.

Mali, in North Africa, is home to the largest building made out of clay; the structure only took one year to complete. For the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle, 465 tons of marble were hefted to the Alps to the building site. The Atomium in Brussels boasts the longest escalators in Europe. The largest mosque in the world is as big as 56 football fields. "The illustrated atlas of architecture and marvelous monuments" presents a world of breathtaking buildings and their incredible stories through illustrated maps and engaging factsheets. Sarah Tavernier and Alexandre Verhille have already deftly shown with "Legendary routes of the world" that they are experts in showcasing the biggest and the best. Now, for "The illustrated atlas of architecture and marvelous monuments", they researched the longest bridges, tallest towers, the most impressive cultural sites, and plenty of curiosities. Exciting facts are woven together with a myriad of architectural styles; the material feats are skillfully and artfully placed upon bold maps, situating the constructions within a geographic context.

Summary:
We humans long for daylight, a view of greenery, and a sense of connection. Yet today, transparent building envelopes seem less in demand. Instead of granting views in and out, we create retreats. What forms of transparency remain desirable amid social uncertainty and urban densification? And do transparent or translucent envelopes still make sense when contemporary energy concepts are applied? Light, air, and sun are no longer universally welcome. The spaces behind the climate envelope must be protected from solar gains and heat loss. Limited opening ratios, smart building technology, and algorithm-driven facade design have become the norm. In such scenarios, people are treated as disruptive elements, better kept passive. Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal show that another way is possible. Working with 51N4E in Brussels, Lacaton & Vassal recently extended a residential block in the Peterbos district using their familiar approach: adding new winter gardens. Transparent and translucent sliding panels alternate, while curtains provide shade or privacy when needed. The result is adaptable space that responds to changing conditions – yet always leaves the final decision to the human user. A drawn curtain can create a sense of withdrawal, but it can just as easily be opened again
