The EU is involved, either directly or indirectly, in the most vital issues of national spatial policy. The indirect - and therefore usually unseen - consequences are often more significant, and will become increasingly so in the future. Summary:
The EU is involved, either directly or indirectly, in the most vital issues of national spatial policy. The indirect - and therefore usually unseen - consequences are often more significant, and will become increasingly so in the future. These are the most important findings in "Unseen Europe : a survey of EU politics and its impact on spatial development in the Netherlands". This study by the Netherlands Institute for Spatial Planning (Ruimtelijk Planbureau) was presented to the Dutch minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment, Sybilla M. Dekker. This study surveys a selected number of spatially relevant EU policy fields and their potential impacts in the Netherlands. Given this growing importance of European policy, those involved in spatial policy should keep abreast of developments to avoid being caught off-guard by new EU directives or initiatives. Where necessary position should be taken against the too uniform a character of European policy. Otherwise, the Dutch government should more actively anticipate the chances offered by the European context. Without this European perspective it is more and more difficult to conduct spatial policy. Instead of considering the EU as restrictive only, policy should therefore be formulated from a European perspective. In this respect the Netherlands still turns its back on Brussels too much.

How can the history of a continent and an idea be brought together in a new place? In 2009 the European Parliament decided to create an institution dedicated to the history of Europe, an emblematic building located in the heart of the European Quarter in Brussels. The design, a transformation by the team of Chaix & Morel et Associés and JSWD Architekten of an Art Deco building from 1934, was finished in 2017. Their concept addressed how European history could find a spatially sensitive expression. This publication, authored by Sophie Trelcat and designed by Baldinger and Vu-Huu, presents the history of this seminal architectural project from conception to completion.

Summary:
Dan Graham is among the most influential of the Conceptual artists who emerged in America during the mid 1960s. A pioneer in performance and video art in the 1970s, Graham later turned his attention to architectural projects designed for social interaction in public spaces, among them The Children’s Pavilion (1989) with Jeff Wall. Writing has always been a major aspect of Graham’s work. His texts range from early Conceptual art pieces inserted in mass-market magazines, to writing on his fellow artists, to analyses of popular culture, from Dean Martin to the post-Punk era. Well-known also among architects and urban theorists, during the 1990s Graham has been offered major public commissions throughout North America and Europe. London-based curator Mark Francis discusses with the artist how his public participation-based work has evolved. Brussels-based critic Birgit Pelzer draws on her extensive knowledge of Graham’s work and writings. New York-based architectural theorist Beatriz Colomina focuses on Graham’s Alteration to a Suburban House (1978). The artist has chosen an extract from the science fiction novel Ubik by Philip K Dick, whose writings were a formative influence. A substantial Artist’s Writings section, key to understanding Dan Graham, completes the book.

Summary:
Modelling Time: The Permanent Collection 1925–2014 chronicles the exhibition Model as Ruin at the House of Artists in Oslo, November 1 – December 15, 2013. Together with master students from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Mari Hvattum and Mari Lending brought a unique, modernist model collection out of the archives, re-exhibiting it at the venue that once hosted its biggest ever display in 1931. The collection testifies to a different modernism; not white and austere but colourful, diverse, and full of detail. Modelling Time gives an in-depth portrayal of the so-called ‘Permanent Collection’ of Norwegian scale models, photographs and drawings, tracing its international trajectory of exhibitions from Brussels in 1927 to its last appearance at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939. The book documents the collection’s heydays as part of a vivid international modernist culture, as well as its archival diaspora as it falls into oblivion after WWII. In an extensive, archive-based essay editors Lending and Hvattum give the full context of the collection, while Juliane Derry and Jorge Otero-Pailos look into the models’ materiality and issues of decay. Model scholars and architecture curators Barry Bergdoll, Carson Chan, Pippo Ciorra, Oliver Elser, Juliet Koss, Andres Lepik, Adam Lowe, Wallis Miller, Jorge Otero-Pailos, Léa-Catherine Szacka, and Victor Plathe Tschudi presents a variety of perspectives inspired by the Oslo collection.

Summary:
Ralf Coussée and Klaas Goris. Over a period of twenty years, the two architects have built up a solid oeuvre. The proof can be found in this book, which offers a survey of the architecture of the due, both of works on paper and of designs that have been built. This book takes you on a guided tour of their work that is full of surprises. It shows you why Coussée & Goris do not strive inflexibly for an absolute, radical Modernist renewal, but to let old and new flow into one another harmoniously. You discover an oeuvre that is evidence of an architecture with a style of its own, based on an intriguing play of patterns, themes and constructional methods, and that at the same time reveals the 'thinking in doing' of architecture. You learn how remote their work is from doctrines, manifestos and concepts that alienate the design process from the architectural traditions of making and building. This book is more than just a monograph. It is a real architects' book, like an artist's book. After all, the architecture of Coussée & Goris should not be read as a series of individual buildings, but as an imaginary landscape, a capriccio, in which the principles are made visible of an architecture that inscribes itself in a contemporary framework. To understand the working and scenographic force of the landscape as the supporting element in the architecture of Coussée & Goris, the architecture theoretician Koen Van Synghel confronts pairs of designs: the master plan for the Jeugd- en Natuurdomein De Hoge Rielen, the reconversion of an industrial transformer complex near Kortrijk into a multifunctional urban landscape, the building of a factory shed in Roeselare, the conversion of a furniture store into a school of architecture in Brussels, and the award-winning submission for a crematorium in Hofheide. The art and poetry from which the artists draw their inspiration have forced their way into this book, show the world behind the designs, and make this publication unique.
