Summary:
Only in the last decade have climatologists developed an accurate picture of yearly climate conditions in historical times. This development confirmed a long-standing suspicion: that the world endured a 500-year cold snap -- The Little Ice Age -- that lasted roughly from A.D. 1300 until 1850. "The little ice age" tells the story of the turbulent, unpredictable and often very cold years of modern European history, how climate altered historical events, and what they mean in the context of today's global warming. With its basis in cutting-edge science, "The little ice age" offers a new perspective on familiar events. Renowned archaeologist Brian Fagan shows how the increasing cold affected Norse exploration; how changing sea temperatures caused English and Basque fishermen to follow vast shoals of cod all the way to the New World; how a generations-long subsistence crisis in France contributed to social disintegration and ultimately revolution; and how English efforts to improve farm productivity in the face of a deteriorating climate helped pave the way for the Industrial Revolution and hence for global warming.

Summary:
Ongoing use of fossil fuels, the development of industrial zones in city centers, and even our growing reliance on air conditioners have led to extreme climate swings. Now an urgent public concern, global warming alarms ever more people—and yet most of them still hesitate to identify a workable plan of action. Approaching the problem head-on, "Solar Guerilla" highlights a number of programs, architects, and companies that are already active in such cities as Chicago, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv. In a series of case studies, this book focuses on efficient strategies implemented at the local level, where collaboration within communities may be the key to effectively combating environmental damage. As companies like China’s Turenscape and Israel’s Electreon thrive alongside programs such as Chicago’s Third Nature approach to its famous riverwalk, the local efforts begin to yield global results. As "Solar Guerilla" demonstrates, these and other initiatives may be the best way to counter the emotional fatigue and physical disasters that currently plague us in our all-too-rapidly-changing urban environment.

Summary:
"A Moving Border: Alpine Cartographies of Climate Change" builds upon the Italian Limes project by Studio Folder, which was devised in 2014 to survey the fluctuations of the boundary line across the Alps in real time. The book charts the effects of climate change on geopolitical understandings of border and the cartographic methods used to represent them. Locating the Italian condition alongside a longer political history of boundary making, the book brings together critical essays, visualizations, and unpublished documents from state archives. By examining the nexus of nationalism and cartography, "A Moving Border" details how borders are both material and imagined, and the ways global warming challenges Western conceptions of territory. Even more, it provides a blueprint for spatial intervention in a world where ecological processes are bound to dominate geopolitical affairs.

Summary:
The twenty-first century is a period of great environmental and social transformation as climate change increasingly marks lives at levels that are personal, familial, communal, national, and global. ''A Canadian Climate of Mind'' presents stories that emerge from the waters, lands, and climate of Canada, and which have the potential to renew a compassionate energy for changing human relations with each other and with our world. Weaving together voices from numerous backgrounds and time periods with Indigenous views on present and past environmental challenges, ''A Canadian Climate of Mind'' illuminates a world that is being shaken to its core while we hesitate to act.
