The work shown at the U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Biennale is vital and proactive, suggesting solutions, describing the possibilities of new techniques or technologies, or re-framing the problems of the city, and, in the process, defining a new model of architectural practice. From John Portman's architect-as-initiator model to cityLAB's research-based, innovative community-driven proposals, these works seek to define their own problems, audiences, and missions. The can-do spirit of each of these projects echo the collaborative, team-based methodologies of 306090 Books, co-presenters of the U.S. Pavilion with Atlanta's High Museum of Art. The impressive scale, reach, and beauty of the participants' projects makes their ground-up formation all the more inspiring.

The book also includes selected projects originating from the AA's Hooke Park campus in Dorset and our Research Cluster initiatives as well as from the immensely diverse design workshops and public events associated with the AA's global Visiting School, undertaken in more than a dozen cities since its launch in early 2008. Complementing these projects, this book also offers a snapshot of the AA's vibrant public programme of lectures and exhibitions and its equally pioneering catalogue of publications and other printed media.

Summary:
The Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, series of lectures, and exhibition organized by the Architectural League and its Young Architects and Designers Committee. This year's theme: It's Different. Every generation thinks it is special, new, and different and ours is no exception. What perhaps may make the claim stronger for the current generation are the circumstances: global networking and integration, and global economic and security crises; environmental activism and environmental catastrophe; virtual revolution and physical stagnation. Against these challenges and in light of the fundamental ruptures of the Great Recession, the committee posits that the future will operate on a wholly different paradigm.

Summary:
Beyond a design school, the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) is an immersive environment — a dense atmosphere saturated with creative and intellectual activity. Platform 4 represents a selective sampling of agendas cultivated at the GSD during the last academic year, revealing a diverse mixture of projects, research, and events. Organized as a searchable database, this publication documents both site and situation at the GSD—it is an institutional index. While Platform 4 records research trajectories from the past year, it also has the capacity to set agendas for future work. By framing a set of issues and topics, Platform 4 focuses attention towards particular areas of interest, allowing individual work to build on and contribute to a larger body of disciplinary knowledge. In that sense, the themes within this book become projective, they provide frameworks for future inquiry.

Bracket 2 examines physical and virtual soft systems, as they pertain to infrastructure, ecologies, landscapes, environments, and networks. In an era of declared crises—economic, ecological and climatic, amongst others—the notion of soft systems has gained increasing traction as a counterpoint to permanent, static and hard systems. Acknowledging fluid and indeterminate situations with complex feedback loops that allow for reaction and adaption, the possibility of soft systems has re-entered the domain of design. Bracket 2 critically positions and defines soft systems through 27 projects and 12 articles. From soft politics, soft power and soft spaces to fluid territories, software and soft programming, Bracket 2 unpacks the use and role of responsive, indeterminate, flexible, and immaterial systems in design.

Summary:
Our global thirst for energy and raw materials is increasing all the time. Year after year, humanity exhausts large quantities of mineral resources; the areas of the world in which we drill and dig for oil, gas, coal, gravel, clay and ore are becoming more and more remote, and the range of resources demanded is expanding constantly. Lusitania is a prime example of this kind of resource depletion. Unrestrained open-pit mining during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has devastated the region, and ten years ago this "wounded landscape" became the subject of an International Building Exhibition dedicated to providing creative designs for a post-mining landscape. What are the possibilities of such landscapes? What methods and processes may be applied in regions beyond Lusatia? In Redesigning Wounded Landscapes, ten authors explore these questions, looking at the region and the project from a wide range of perspectives.

Summary:
As innovation and new developments in technology now follow each other faster and faster, making yesterday's architectural fantasies today's construction realities, there's already a movement to return to the essential things in life: be it a quest for sustainability, which implies basic principles such as incorporating a region's typologies and materials, or for reasons of expense, which often prompt a search for efficient designs or manufacturing technology, or even aesthetic requirements that allow people to step out of our increasingly noisy and heterogeneous environment. However, achieving simplicity in design belies the enormous amount of effort required to plan and realise these types of architectural designs. That’s why the publication Building Simply Two – just as volume one – aims to look behind the facade. Well-known authors who are experts in their fields investigate the particular solutions used in a construction project in terms of design and construction, including material selection, cost efficiency and sustainability.
