Summary:
"A matter of chance" explores the contemporary use of the photographic medium as a recording tool in support of scientific knowledge. In the age of screen culture, the volume investigates photography’s dual nature as both evidence and construction, examining the relationship between humans and their environment; their desire to control, measure and catalogue it, ultimately transforming it into a marketable product. The book is modelled according to the logic of an atlas and combines different photographic registers, including views of buildings in Silicon Valley’s technology hubs and data centres, images of scientific experiments taken in laboratories or studios, alongside a body of scientific archival materials sourced online from governmental institutions, research agencies and educational establishments.

Summary:
This book verifies the need for the arts and the sciences to work together in order to develop more creative and conceptual approaches to innovation and presentation. By blending ethnographical case studies, scientific viewpoints and critical essays, the focus of this research inquiry is the lab context. For scientists, the lab context is one of the most important educational experiences. For contemporary artists, laboratories are inspiring spaces to investigate, share know-how transfer and search for new collaboration potentials. The nine labs represented in this book are from the natural, computing and engineering sciences. An enclosed comprehensive DVD documents the results, the problems and serves as a guideline for the future of true Art/Sci experiments.

Summary:
In this story, we meet, among others, the Boston Brahmins Jack Phillips and Nathaniel Saltonstall; the self-taught architect, carpenter and painter Jack Hall; the Finn Olav Hammarström, who had worked for Alvar Aalto; and the prolific Charlie Zehnder, who brought the lessons of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Brutalism to the Cape. Initially, these designers had no clients; they built for themselves and their families, or for friends sympathetic to their ideals. Their homes were laboratories, places to work through ideas without spending much money. The result of this ferment is a body of work unlike any other, a regional modernism fusing the building traditions of Cape Cod fishing towns with Bauhaus concepts and postwar experimentation.

Summary:
From 1938 to 1958 Mies van der Rohe planned and built the new campus for the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Limited funding demanded extreme financial prudence and the imagination of the architect was fired by this challenge. With load-bearing brick walls, skeletal structures constructed out of visible reinforced concrete and steel, Mies created a masterpiece of simple elegance. The clarity and structure of the basic form has proved to be an enduring solution for the various classrooms and laboratories over the years. With concise texts and expressive images, this book captures the essence of these institute buildings which together with the book on Crown Hall, the Department of Architecture at ITT, presents an indispensable documentation of these epoch-making buildings.
