Summary:
The Zurich architect couple Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer are known for creating places for intense contemplation. After the Kirchner Museum at Davos, the extension of the Winterthur art museum, the renovation of the Winterthur collection Oskar Reinhart, their new museum project at Appenzell also exhibits a powerful, idiosyncratic sense of aesthetics. The Museum Liner, dedicated to the Appenzell painters Carl August and Carl Walter Liner, father and son, presents itself as a sculptural design: the very antithesis to descriptive postmodern architecture that threatens to draw attention away from the exhibits, this museum by Gigon and Guyer rests on the imperative of clear stereometrics and neutral spaces. In a rather subtle way, the architects succeeded in both integrating the new structure into the rural surroundings and the surroundings into the building. The fragile balance of mutual integration and partial participation may well serve as a metaphor for the difficult relationship between life and art. This book features the building, completed in 1998, in a photographic sequence by Gaston Wicky and textual essays by Hubertus Adam and Peter Dering.

Summary:
First published in 2017 as Revisiting Postmodernism, this refreshed edition of a seminal text reflects on a design movement that changed our world. Postmodernism invites readers to explore the style in a new light, as the cultural phenomenon that it is, one which thrives on complexity and pluralism. Exploring its expression not only in architecture, but in design, urban planning and placemaking, Postmodernism reflects on the history of the movement and its continuing influence on design practice today. Sir Terry Farrell and Adam Nathaniel Furman present two separate but complementary perspectives of this rich period of architectural history; one account as lived experience from a protagonist and pioneer in the field of postmodern architecture, and the other analysing the movement afresh, through the lens of the 21st century. Shedding new light onto the forces and influences of the time, and offering insight into how these were transforming approaches to architecture both in the UK and internationally, this important book presents a new appreciation of this period of architectural history.

Summary:
In the period following the Second World War, the Architectural Association (AA) became the only British school of architecture of truly global renown. It was one of only two schools in the world which fully embraced and promoted the pedagogical ideals put forward by CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne), and emerged as an admired example for architectural education in other countries. Many of the most famous British architects and critics of the past 60 years attended the AA. This book traces the history of the school from the end of the war until the mid-1960's, when it surrendered its position as the pacemaker in British architectural education in order to safeguard its institutional independence. Alvin Boyarsky, who became chairman in 1971, remodeled the AA as a postmodern, "internationalist" school and detached it from its modernist, British origins. Thus, there has been no research into the AA’s postwar history, which remains dominated by myths and half-truths. The book replaces these myths with an in-depth account of what really happened.

Summary:
This second volume of "The Details of Modern Architecture" continues the study of the relationships of the ideals of design and the realities of construction in modern architecture, beginning in the late 1920s and extending to the present day. It contains a wealth of new information on the construction of modern architecture at a variety of scales from minute details to general principles. There are over 500 illustrations, including 130 original photographs and 230 original axonometric drawings, arranged to explain the technical, aesthetic, and historical aspects of the building form. Individual chapters treat the work of Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Eric Gunnar Asplund, Richard Neutra, Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, and Louis Kahn, as well as the Case Study, High Tech, Postmodern, and Deconstructivist architects. Among the individual buildings documented are Eliel Saarinen's Cranbrook School, Asplund's Woodland Cemetery, Fuller's Dymaxion house, the Venturi house, the Eames and other Case Study houses, the concrete buildings of Le Corbusier, Aalto's Säynätsalo Town Hall, and Kahn's Exeter Library and Salk Institute -- with many details published for the first time.

Summary:
Architecture has a powerful role in nation building and identity formation. Buildings and monuments not only constitute the built fabric of society, they reflect the intersection of culture, politics, economics, and aesthetics as these forces are played out in distinct social settings and distinct times. This extraordinary anthology traces the interaction between culture and politics as reflected in Canadian architecture and the infrastructure of ordinary life, from the first contacts between indigenous peoples and European missionaries to the construction of big-box shopping centres in postmodern cities. Whether focusing on Jesuit perceptions of New France, the construction of Toronto’s St. James Cathedral or Canada’s first Parliament, Brutalism in Canadian architecture, or the ideas of Marshall McLuhan and Arthur Erickson, these essays showcase ways of thinking about the built environment that extend beyond considerations of authorship and style to address the influence of cultural politics and insights from race and gender studies and from postcolonial and spatial theory. By coupling a national focus with a wide historical scope, Architecture and the Canadian Fabric transforms how we see the role of architecture and in doing so radically questions how we continue to live in, interact with, and interpret the fabricated world.

Summary:
From a renowned musician and visual artist comes "Bicycle Diaries" - part travelogue, part journal, part photo album - a behind-the-handlebars celebration of seeing the world from the seat of a bike. Byrne is fascinated by cities, especially as visited on a trusty fold-up bicycle, and in these random musings over many years while cycling through such places as Sydney, Australia; Manila, Philippines; San Francisco; or his home of New York, the former Talking Head, artist and author (True Stories) offers his frank views on urban planning, art and postmodern civilization in general. For each city, he focuses on its germane issues, such as the still troublingly clear-cut class system in London, notions of justice and human migration that spring to mind while visiting the Stasi Museum in Berlin, religious iconography in Istanbul, gentrification in Buenos Aires and Imelda Marcos's legacy in Manila. He notes that the condition of the roads reveals much about a city, like the impossibly civilized, pleasant pathways designed just for bikes in Berlin versus the fractured car-mad system of highways in some American cities, giving way to an eerie post apocalyptic landscape (e.g., Detroit). Candid and self-deprecating, Byrne offers a work that is as engaging as it is cerebral and informative

Summary:
This book is the first English translation of a renowned collection of essays by Joan Fontcuberta, in which he considers the technological shift that photography has undergone in recent years. The medium finds itself torn between loss and hope, between the disappearance of the silver gelatin photograph and the possibilities of the digital medium. Fontcuberta uses the motif of Pandora’s box to conceptualise the capricious nature of photography, its fickle relationship to truth – employing the Greek myth concerning a large jar containing myriad forms of human unhappiness, or blessings, depending on the version you read. As Pandora’s camera, digital technology spells calamity to some and liberation to others; it is blamed for irretrievably discrediting veracity, but at the same time it introduces a new degree of truth. In his signature ironic style and playful tone, Fontcuberta examines the new principles that have arisen within the digital ecosystem, in jocular essays such as I Knew the Spice Girls or The Mystery of the Missing Nipple. His critical reflections and poetic evocations are inspired by the hope that still remains in the notion of a postmodern Pandora’s camera – one that might not only describe our environment, but also bring transparency to it.
