Summary:
Through 650 images drawn from the French National Institute for typographic research unpublished archives, this catalogue tells the untold story of a period of profound technological change, exploring the little-known world of typography design through a diverse selection of projects drawing on both an age-old craft tradition and the most radical innovation. The Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT) was set up by the French government in 1985, in order to revitalise typeface design in France, a sector beset by problems. Its remit was soon extended to cover fields of typographical research and practice beyond type design proper. Between 1985 and 2006 the Atelier trained around a hundred students, contributing to a spectacular revival of French typography.

Summary:
Conceived by Atelier Hoko, this booklet approaches uncovering implicit conditions that exist in our experience of the everyday. The term “secondary” refers to material and immaterial conditions and sensations that humans are not conscious of in their interaction with things and the immediate surroundings. In so doing, the independent research lab hopes to draw upon a renewed sensibility towards living. This instalment analyses the act of drinking from a cup in exceeding detail, through photos, diagrams and texts. Atelier Hoko developed this programme in response to questions on how design today can move beyond its perceived perimeters.

Summary:
Atelier Bow-Wow allows a crucial inside look at a range of more than 40 recent projects, including residential buildings, public facilities and installations created specifically for exhibitions, with page after page of detailed sectional perspective drawings. These elaborate diagrams are based on section details drafted in the final design phase of each project, whereby the studio seeks the best representation of design characteristics, investigating various parameters by shifting perspectives and drawing in different ways. Latent spatiality and geometric form become readily apparent to the observer, while the graphic anatomy of lines and data informatively depicts each architectural work.

Summary:
Each year the Wouter Mikmak Foundation invites a designer to lecture for the series ‘Designers of the Future’. This publication presents that of the Tokyo-based office Atelier Bow-Wow, founded in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima. Their vision calls for a shift in architectural design from individuality based to commonality based, through the notion of architectural ‘behaviorology’. Behaviour in this sense is an inclusive term that not only denotes human practice, but also a building’s behaviour as material typology, as well as phenomena produced by natural elements like light, air, heat, and water. An architecture based on commonalities is key to their discussion.
