Summary:
"Once upon a China" is an unconventional architectural story of great beauty, empathy, honour and sadness. The chapters are reimaginations of "Dream of the red mansion," "Journey to the West ," "The water margin," and "Romance of the three kingdoms," and are conceived as specific themes of Chinese identity: domesticity, consumerism, democracy and adaptability. These four seminal pre-modern fictions contain diverse voices and philosophical perspectives on history as well as satires that have defined past developments of Chinese societies, politics and the built environment. Comics is an unorthodox but extraordinary medium for architectural speculations. The eccentric characteristics of comic-inspired drawings in this book enrich the processes of conception and conceptualisation of design – their fragmented yet sequential nature proves versatile in the imagination of spatial experiences, enabling the complex stories of place, brief and building to materialise. At the same time, the politicisation of architecture through comics engenders a sense of optimism to reappraise Chinese design futures and critical thinking beyond the exuberance of non-contextual Western capitalist models.

Summary:
This publication presents projects in recent years in Japan, which respond to the need for new forms of housing. The architects are developing solutions that allow residents to live together but still maintain enough distance and privacy. The presented apartment types and their layout allow for a variety of life models. Particularly interesting here is the use of spaces that provide a gradual transition from public to private space - an approach to building that, according to experts, could revolutionize western residential architecture. The publication portrays these new forms of building and living based on prominent Japanese examples that include Shigerun Ban, Sou Foujimoto, and SANAA.

Summary:
Authors Julian Worrall and Erez Golani Solomon present eighty-three buildings, from world-renowned projects such as Herzog & de Meuron's Prada building and FOA's Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, to private houses and office towers of glass and steel. Alongside Western architects, who have built some of their most outstanding projects in Tokyo, the authors showcase recent works of celebrated Japanese architects, including Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, Fumihiko Maki, and Kenzo Tange. Essays introduce each building not just from an architectural perspective, but also as part of the social, cultural, and political tapestry of the city, creating a full portrait of the metropolis. The book is divided into seven easy-to-navigate chapters, each covering a different Tokyo district, with detailed maps and access information, and illustrated throughout with black-and-white photography by Joshua Lieberman. This is an indispensable guidebook for the professional architect, the sightseer, or anyone with an interest in contemporary Japan. Tokyo—one of the most innovative and forward-thinking cities in the world, and nowhere is this more evident than in its modern architecture. Eighty-three of the city's latest buildings are gathered in these pages and introduced not just from an architectural perspective but as part of the social, cultural, and political tapestry of the city. With black-and-white photography spotlighting a wide range of projects, from the monumental masterpieces of famous architects to the everyday buildings often overlooked, this is a full overview of the architectural landscape of twenty-first-century Tokyo.

Summary:
While lying on the beach in Nice one day, eighteen-year-old Yves Klein and his friends decided to divide the world up among themselves. Klein (1928-1962) chose the air, the cloudless sky. He remained fascinated with the element and its immaterial quality throughout his life. In the late fifties, he and the German architect Werner Ruhnau developed plans for an "architecture of air" composed of walls and roofs of air-as represented, for example, in the idea of the "Temple of the Elements" with fountains of water and fire and a café protected against the rain only by air currents. Klein associated this idea with a philosophy of optimism devoted to the creation of a paradise on earth, a Garden of Eden in which human beings would be free to pursue their own interests. The publication is the first book devoted exclusively to this aspect of Yves Klein's art. It includes reproductions of drawings and other works as well as essays and lectures on the subject. Additional articles by other authors emphasize the significance of Klein's work to the theme of the immaterial.

Summary:
From 1932 to 1938, before emigrating to Venezuela, the artist Gego studied architecture and engineering at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart. In 1955 — at the time, that is, when she began to become active as an artist — she wrote to her former professor Paul Bonatz, ”Even if I have strayed from architecture and found myself unable to master life through it, it has none- theless shaped me, to some degree at least. Even unhappy loves are of great value and have their effect.“ A few years later, MoMA in New York bought one of the artist’s first works. Today, Gego ranks as one of the best-known artists in Latin America. Conceptual approaches and practical ideas about architecture and processes of space creation have remained a constant theme in her art and have been the perennial subject of creative debate. This book is published in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.
