Summary:
The successful conversion and expansion of abandoned buildings and relics from the industrial past have been the mission of Atelier Deshaus from Shanghai since 2001. The question of how formerly closed industrial complexes can be transformed into new, attractive places for the public is the core theme of this exhibition. It focuses on the transformation along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, whose seamless accessibility as a public space was heralded by Expo 2010 Better City - Better Life. Aedes is showing seven projects that have used the potential of former industrial sites to bring new functions to the riverbank and to which the residents attach both emotional and cultural significance. Abandoned production sites and relics of inner-city heavy industry, warehouses, and port facilities can be a huge burden on the sustainable development of a city, especially if they are seen as waste to be disposed of. With its projects, Atelier Deshaus shows how the grey energy used in them can be preserved, at least in parts, through conversion and reconstruction, and how new functions can be assigned. In the face of climate change and the generally far too energy-hungry construction industry, it is also an obvious necessity in China to take an unbiased look at existing buildings. Nevertheless, demolition is still often the priority. Atelier Deshaus counters this with a strategy of minimal intervention that sensitively heralds the transformation of the existing buildings without destroying the historical reminders.

Summary:
Under the label Atelier Zanolli, a fantastic world of silk fabrics painted and imprinted with patterns, opulently embroidered cushions, colorful pearl creations, and finely crafted leather and wood articles, was created between 1905 and 1939 in Zurich. The Zanollis had immigrated from Italy in 1905. Their family business was run by Antonietta and her daughters Pia, Lea, and Zoe Zanolli. The cultural and stylistic influences manifested in the Zanollis’ visually appealing products range from the avant-garde to an aesthetic forged by a spirit of intellectual national defense against the increasing threat of the totalitarian regimes in Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, and the communist Soviet Union, that was prevalent in Switzerland in the 1930s. Driven by a striving for artistic self-realization, the atelier defied the many economic challenges of the period and carried out many commissions for Zurich’s leading textile businesses and department stores. This book traces the history of Atelier Zanolli, places its work in the context of the growth of Zurich and the Swiss textile industry in the first half of the twentieth century, and for the first time positions the “Zanolli style” internationally. More than six hundred images show the wealth of colors and shapes in a veritable cosmos of textiles and crafted objects, as well as templates, sketches, private photographs, business cards, and letters. The essays illuminate the techniques and work processes used, discuss entire motif families and unique designs, and grant rare comprehensive insight into the tastes of the time.

Summary:
Yoshiharu Tsukamoto of Atelier Bow-Wow tours the world in his quest to seek out and analyse the behaviour of windows. Featuring gorgeous photographs of hundreds of these objects and their associated interior and exterior spaces – from the mundane to the beautiful and enigmatic – the book explores how windows can create uniquely cultural, urban, and social spaces, as well as stimulate activities like rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. By focusing on this architectural typology, Tsukamoto offers commentary on the allure and fascination of windows, and how they help to generate positive spaces within buildings, which in turns leads to an energising and refreshing sense of living.

A home is not a hole. Les plans d'exécution de ces deux structures à la croisée de l'architecture et de l'art sont également reproduits.

Summary:
In this second volume, Atelier Bow-Wow shifts from studying the behavioural characteristics of the window typology to investigating their origins, history, and relationships. How humans experience encounters with each other and the spaces inside and outside buildings is key to deciphering how combinations of context and environmental factors lead to various functions and typologies in different regions. From Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain, to Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, and Japan, the quest spans a variety of buildings and streetscapes, encompassing both the contemporary and historic. The result is a remarkable collection of photographs and analyses.
