Summary:
Exponential population ageing is changing how we coexist in urban spaces. Improving discourse on “care” is high on the agenda in our globally ageing world. The task of densifying cities with hundreds of apartments in single buildings reminds us that we are responsible for incredibly sophisticated social structures. In designing these projects, de Architekten Cie. has accumulated significant experience, understanding the challenges on both architectural and urban scales, as well as their societal and emotional dimensions. ‘The Architecture of Ageing’ shares the experiences of their long-term collaborative project on housing, ageing, and care in the city.

Summary:
The Body at Risk: Photography of Disorder, Illness, and Healing is the first book to explore the ways that photojournalists and social documentarians have conceptualized the human subject as a site of both good and ill health. The volume looks at photographs depicting child laborers; Depression-era health programs; general medical care in the southern United States at mid-century; people with HIV, AIDS, and polio, along with their caretakers and the health workers who advocate for them; environmental pollution; physical and psychological injuries received during warfare; domestic violence; and emergency care in the modern urban hospital. It brings together ten significant bodies of photographs made over the past one hundred years to show how human health topics have been represented for the general public and how the emphasis on health has shifted; how photography has been used to present and promote certain points of view about health and the social circumstances that affect it, both positively and negatively; and how photography has helped shape public knowledge of and opinion about health care and some of the events and circumstances that engender it.

Summary:
In the 1960s and 1970s large, high-technology, inpatient oriented hospitals reflected the central role of such facilities in an expanding healthcare system. But hospital architecture and the healthcare system have vastly changed since then, in profound and unpredicted ways. This book explores for the first time how and why acute care hospitals and the often related psychiatric facilities, retirement communities, and community clinics have been transformed during the final decades of the twentieth century. The authors also consider utopian visions of unbuilt work and look ahead to the possible healthcare landscape of the future: "health villages," home-based care for the aging and aged population, and cyberclinics and virtual hospitals.

Summary:
Caring Culture: Art, Architecture and the Politics of Public Health examines changing political uses of the concept of care in neoliberal democracies and asks how artists, architects, and designers both contribute to and attempt to critique its social manifestations. The publication brings together case studies of artistic and design interventions within health and social care institutions and broader political and philosophical essays and interviews relating to civic wellbeing. Contributors include curators, artists, politicians, architects, and healthcare professionals. It is the first volume in the Actors, Agents and Attendants series of publications and symposia commissioned by SKOR to investigate the role of cultural practice in the organization of the public domain.
