With geometric patterns resembling Arabian ornamentation, the dome over the Louvre in Abu Dhabi conjures many associations, but the idea of a complex space-frame structure is certainly not the first that comes to mind. With geometric patterns resembling Arabian ornamentation, the dome over the Louvre in Abu Dhabi conjures many associations, but the idea of a complex space-frame structure is certainly not the first that comes to mind. Parametric 3D models were used in the development of the prefabricated elements, which were bolted and welded together on site in the desert. Steel structures of this kind are an essential part of the supreme discipline of architecture, and the April edition of “Detail” documents various examples of the great scope afforded by steel in building, its aesthetic and constructional advantages and the details implicit to it.

Summary:
The post-war years were a very intense period of experiments, visions and imagination. The end of such a tragic period for the world enabled intellectuals and architects in particular, but also film-makers to rethink the future and imagine new situations with an optimistic use of technologies. For some of them, such as Buckminster Fuller, technology was the resource that was to save the world, as in the case of covering Manhattan with a glass dome, almost to preserve it like an ancient ruin. Thus, this new issue of archphoto2.0 is dedicated to the "Visionary Thinkers", to those who turned their minds to imagine new scenarios.

To create a new skin several form studies have been carried out in a temporary geodesic dome, constructed in the yard of the studio. The final surface of the car consists of layers of ice, frozen around two intricate nets, mirrored plates and light. The “Climate car” can only exist in a microclimate with a temperature of minus 6 degrees Celsius or below. Including conversations between Olafur Eliasson and a number of distinguished thinkers, such as architect and artist Yona Friedman, urban theorist Bart Lootsma, and Head of Design BMW Christopher Bangle.

Summary:
Located at the center of the German furniture manufacturing industry, Marta, the latest European Museum by Frank O. Gehry, opened in December 2004 to universal acclaim. Conceived as a laboratory for redefining the relationship between art, design, and industry, this Gehry masterwork houses art galleries, a library, educational facilities, and conference and cultural meeting rooms. While the gallery is, for Gehry, an uncharacteristic neutral white cube, it is wrapped in a series of bulging curvatures creating a dome that announces his distinctive architectural signature. This book, which contains previously unpublished material on the design and construction of the museum, offers insight into the working process of arguably the world's most famous architect, and his ideas about the shifting boundaries between industry, design, art, and architecture.

Summary:
Since 1997, architect and installation artist Markus Heinsdorff has focused much of his work on the potential and possibilities afforded by bamboo. This volume shows how that interest played out in his design for the Sino-German pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The pavilion, the only binational building at the Expo, employs an innovative two-story bamboo membrane structure, while the rest of the building is composed almost entirely of bamboo canes and laminates. This highly illustrated volume documents the planning and creation of the building, as well as the environmentalist ideology underlying its design. In addition, the book features a chapter that addresses some of Heinsdorff’s other projects, including an airship built in Bali, a treehouse in the canopy of a primeval forest, and a perpetually regrowing bamboo dome.
