For decades, husband-and-wife photography duo James and Karla Murray have been on a mission to document and preserve in film the various small shops of New York City—many of which are quickly disappearing—and a culture of authenticity that is hanging by just a thread. Most of the storefronts are featured in generous single-page images with captions listing location, neighborhood, and year the photo was taken. Filled with diversity and character, these images honor destinations lost to rising rents and changing demographics. Together they comprise both a guidebook and a love letter to a city that never sleeps, and is always evolving.

Summary:
''Object Lessons'' is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. ''Recipe'' reveals the surprising lessons that recipes teach, in addition to the obvious instructions on how to prepare a dish or perform a process. These include lessons in hospitality, friendship, community, family and ethnic heritage, tradition, nutrition, precision and order, invention and improvisation, feasting and famine, survival and seduction and love. A recipe is a signature, as individual as the cook's fingerprint; a passport to travel the world without leaving the kitchen; a lifeline for people in hunger and in want; and always a means to expand one's worldview, if not waistline.

Summary:
We don't just look at buildings: their facades, beautiful or ugly, conceal the spaces we inhabit. We are born, work, love, and die in architecture. We buy and sell it, rent it and squat in it, create and destroy it. These aspects of buildings-economic, erotic, political, and psychological-are crucial if we are to understand architecture properly. And because architecture(...)

And because architecture molds us just as much as we mold it, understanding architecture helps us to understand our lives and our world. Through ten great buildings across the world, Tom Wilkinson reveals the powerful and intimate relationship between society and architecture and asks: Can architecture change our lives for the better?

Carlo Mollino: Giappone 1970
$39.00

Summary:
In May 1970, Carlo Mollino arrived in Osaka for the Universal Exposition. It was a long journey, with stop-offs in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Kyoto. He had a camera with him and, little by little, he grew to love a civilisation which he then scarcely knew. He was fascinated by the women, the traditional places (temples, gardens and pagodas), but also by the new(...)

He was fascinated by the women, the traditional places (temples, gardens and pagodas), but also by the new architecture, the details in the constructions and the swarming crowds. Mollino captures a Japan suspended between ancient rituals and modernity, which over the years to come was to change the face of the country, a change of which the Expo was a mere foretaste.

Summary:
For years, environmentalists have insisted that nature is fundamentally good. In this publication, Benjamin Hale adopts the opposite position — that much of the time nature can be bad — in order to show that even if nature is cruel, we still need to be environmentally conscientious. Hale argues that environmentalists needn’t feel compelled to defend the value of nature, or even to adopt the attitudes of tree-hugging nature lovers. We can acknowledge nature’s indifference and periodic hostility. Deftly weaving anecdote and philosophy, he shows that we don’t need to love nature to be green. What really ought to be driving our environmentalism is our humanity, not nature’s value.

Women in trees

Summary:
“You know, I don’t know how one can walk by a tree and not be happy at the sight of it?” writes Fyodor Dostoyevsky in The Idiot. Perhaps this sentence might explain the subject of women in trees that was so popular between the 1920s and ‘50s and has until now never before been assembled in a book. The enthusiastic collector Jochen Raiss discovered this motif during his(...)

The enthusiastic collector Jochen Raiss discovered this motif during his flea market excursions. These photographs feature young women at dizzying heights who, at times, smile into the camera as if they were in love. The publication assembles the finds from this charming genre that Raiss compiled over a period of 25 years.
